Wine 2007 Second wine Bordeaux Pauillac

The winter was cold and wet, followed by a very early budburst. The fairly high temperatures in April and March favored the start of vegetation. Then until August, a long gray period, temperate and without excess was prolonged. Fortunately, at the beginning of September, the good weather stabilized, thus favoring the good and calm ripening of the grapes.
The second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, the "Carruades de Lafite" 2007, reveals the fruit and freshness of Cabernet on the nose and on the palate. The length is good, it's a nice second wine with somewhat strict tannins on the finish, at this stage of tasting (06-2009). This wine is made from 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Mid ruby. Quite a sludgy colour. Lots of acidity evident from the first sniff. Very light. Well polished with some reasonably firm tannins underneath. Mid weight of fruit. Lightly chewy on the end. Rather astringent finish. A bit dull and lacking life but by no means one of the softest northern Médocs.

Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Pauillac appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, but it was in the 18th century that the château gained international renown, particularly among the European courts. In the 1855 classification, Château Lafite Rothschild was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé, durably cementing its status at the summit of the Bordeaux hierarchy.

Owned by the Rothschild family since 1868, the estate rests on a terroir of fine, deep gravels, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines of Château Lafite Rothschild are distinguished by their finesse, aromatic precision and balance, favouring elegance and length over demonstrative power.

Aged in new oak barrels, the wines favour fine tannin grain, freshness and length over power, and require time before opening up. The estate's great reference points range from the 1982 wine, which ushered in the modern era, to the 1989 vintage and the 1996 wine at the turn of the century, then to 2009 and the year 2010, two consecutive years at the pinnacle of the recent period. Carruades de Lafite, more influenced by Merlot and drawn mainly from the eponymous plateau, offers the most accessible expression.
