The 1990 harvest was abundant and of great quality due to excellent weather conditions for the harvest. Château Lafite Rothschild 1990 has a fine and complex nose, with blackcurrant, blueberry, smoke, leather, spices and a touch of oak. The palate is clean and elegant with plenty of tight tannins and ripe fruit notes. A silky texture and a very long finish. This wine is destined for long aging.

Intense ruby-red garnet, violet reflections, delicate watery rim. Finesse of blackcurrant, plums, tobacco and a hint of truffle, raisins, candied oranges. Powerful palate, complex texture, elegant body, present and firm tannins, red cherry, violets and wild leather, rich in finesse, good persistence, small fruits on the finish, great development potential.

Interestingly, a bottle of 1990 Lafite Rothschild I pulled from my cellar for a video blog on my web site was still buttoned down, tight, and even with extended decanting was not showing as much as I would have hoped. However, a bottle tasted, of all places, in Seoul, Korea in February, was only a few points short of perfection. That amazing performance motivated me to pull another bottle out of my cellar and follow it over the course of two days. Sure enough, by the second day the wine was roaring from the glass. The 1990 Lafite has turned out far better than my early assessment. Whilst it still possesses some firmness, and performs like a late adolescent in terms of its evolution, it boasts gorgeous aromas of cedar, tobacco leaf, cassis, and lead pencil shavings. The explosive aromas are followed by a fleshy, full-bodied wine that should hit its peak in 5-8 years, and last for 25-30 more.

Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Pauillac appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, but it was in the 18th century that the château gained international renown, particularly among the European courts. In the 1855 classification, Château Lafite Rothschild was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé, durably cementing its status at the summit of the Bordeaux hierarchy.

Owned by the Rothschild family since 1868, the estate rests on a terroir of fine, deep gravels, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines of Château Lafite Rothschild are distinguished by their finesse, aromatic precision and balance, favouring elegance and length over demonstrative power.

Aged in new oak barrels, the wines favour fine tannin grain, freshness and length over power, and require time before opening up. The estate's great reference points range from the 1982 wine, which ushered in the modern era, to the 1989 vintage and the 1996 wine at the turn of the century, then to 2009 and the year 2010, two consecutive years at the pinnacle of the recent period. Carruades de Lafite, more influenced by Merlot and drawn mainly from the eponymous plateau, offers the most accessible expression.
