CARRUADES DE LAFITE 2005

The year 2005 was the fourth consecutive year of low rainfall, yet the drought set in early at the end of May, which enabled the vines to adapt by reducing their foliage. The high temperatures of June and July gradually waned to give way in August to cool nights. As a result, good acidity could be retained with slow maturity and no blockages. This year was climatically atypical but ultimately ideal for the production of healthy, very ripe grapes that kept a nice freshness.
The second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, the "Carruades de Lafite" 2005, reveals a complex nose with a hint of exoticism. The mouth is quite ample, round, fleshy. The long finish is embellished with a very slight liveliness.

Jancis Robinson February - 2009

Looks quite developed. Rather light, greenish note on the nose and then very sweet fruit on the palate. A hint of chocolate. Vibrant.

Tom Cannavan (01-2007) The second wine of Lafite is quite closed, but has very intense blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, with a note of blue/black, liquoricy fruit firmness. On the palate this is very dense, dark and pure. The difference between this (which accounts for 60% of Lafite's crop) and several of the wines I've tasted this week is that the tannin structure, whilst still massive and forceful, is still somehow supple and elegant, and integrates with the blue/black, tight fruit and structural acidity beautifully.

Has coffee and chocolate aromas, with hints of ripe fruit. Medium-bodied, with soft tannins and a fruity, plummy, milk chocolaty aftertaste. Best after 2012.

Château Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Pauillac appellation, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, but it was in the 18th century that the château acquired international renown, particularly among European courts. In the 1855 classification, Château Lafite Rothschild was ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé, permanently establishing its status at the top of the Bordeaux hierarchy.

Owned by the Rothschild family since 1868, the estate rests on a terroir of fine, deep gravel, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines of Château Lafite Rothschild are distinguished by their finesse, aromatic precision and balance, favouring elegance and length over demonstrative power.

Emblematic vintages such as Château Lafite Rothschild 1945, Château Lafite Rothschild 1982, Château Lafite Rothschild 1986, Château Lafite Rothschild 1990, Château Lafite Rothschild 1996, Château Lafite Rothschild 2000 or Château Lafite Rothschild 2005 illustrate the estate's stylistic consistency and its ability to express the identity of Pauillac with clarity. Château Lafite Rothschild remains an essential reference for understanding the classical excellence of great Bordeaux wines.
