CARRUADES DE LAFITE 2009

The hot and very humid spring made the technicians of the estate redouble their vigilance in order to protect the vines.
In June, the good weather returned and it lasted all summer. This was followed by a drought, interspersed in July, August and September with slightly rainy episodes. As a result of the beautiful sunshine, hot days without being scorching, and fairly cool nights, the ripening was slow and the harvest was postponed. Its climatic conditions were exceptionally favorable, crowned by harvests under the sun, for a result which will mark.
The second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, the "Carruades de Lafite" 2009, has a very beautiful aromatic radiance. The palate takes shape, very round at first then showing its ripe tannins, its complete structure and its very fruity finish. This wine is made from 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Vibrant with an energetic nose. Very sweet. Rose petals. Not the freshest. Some green notes too. A little loose and formless. Flattering but suggestions of candy rather than refreshment. Falls away a little

Deep dark ruby garnet, violet reflections. On the nose fine wood spice, delicate balsamic touch, fresh orange zest, pleasant bouquet. Substantial, good complexity, fresh acidity structure, ripe cherries, underpinned with chocolatey tannins, mineral, ripe morello cherry fruit on the finish, needs a few more years to fully reveal itself, very good development potential, above-average performance.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. This is a great performance for a Second wine that, let us be honest, 15 years ago was looked down upon and sold cheaply. Here, the 2009 has a very ripe bouquet with breezy dark black plum and boysenberry fruit mingling with orange rind, a touch of bacon fat and even a hint of mango sorbet. The palate is full-bodied with succulent, grippy tannins. There is great weight and volume to this wine, although the acidity keeps everything in check. Smooth and harmonious, turning chalkier in texture towards the finish, this is a complex 2009 Pauillac that should age well.

Jeannie Cho Lee March - 2010

The aromatics of dark blackberries, cassis and hint of violets are gentle and elegant. This wine balances substantial flavours with a sense of lightness. The wonderful powdery textured tannins and ripe, gentle fruit will no doubt please its fans. This is a classy well made wine that exudes elegance and style.

Château Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild, 1st growth classified in 1855, is one of the most renowned Bordeaux châteaux. It shares the top of the official 1855 classification with the greatest estates. Located in the Pauillac appellation, the 103-hectare vineyard is divided into three plots: the slopes surrounding the château, the Carruades plateau to the west, and a 4.5-hectare plot in the neighbouring commune of Saint-Estèphe. The majority of the terroir consists of fine, deep gravel mixed with wind-blown sand on a tertiary limestone base. The grape varieties are 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines for the grand vin is 40 years, with the 20 hectares of young vines (less than 10 years old) being used for the second wine. There are also extremely old plots of over 80 years, one called 'La Gravière' even dating back to 1886. The wine is aged for 18 to 20 months in 100% new oak barrels. Lafite Rothschild produces approximately 15,000 to 20,000 cases per year. The estate also produces a second wine, Carruades de Lafite, with around 25,000 to 30,000 cases. The name of Château Lafite Rothschild's second wine comes from the 'Carruades plateau', the location of a group of plots that was purchased by the château in the 19th century, adjacent to the château's hillock. 'Carruades de Lafite' was formerly called 'Moulin des Carruades', before taking on the name Carruades de Lafite.

The legendary vintages of Château Lafite Rothschild are 1921, 1945, 1959, 1982, 1986, 1988 and 2000, 2005 in recent years.
