CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 1988

Thanks to the progress of chemistry, Château Lafite Rothschild emerged victorious from its June battle against oidium (a vine disease). Hot and dry, the summer and the month of September allowed the harvest to reach maturity. Château Lafite Rothschild 1988 is a colorful, powerfully structured and tannic wine.

Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
Served in magnum, it is delicious at the moment. I have tasted this vintage several times recently and it is not the most emblematic Lafite, but it possesses such a natural charm that it is simply unique. Tobacco, rose petals, subtle toasted cedar and roasted cocoa, with notes of loganberry and raspberry. This Lafite is so delicious and so pleasant that it continues to subtly offer new moments of complexity and discreet power.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Cassis, cedar, tobacco, graphite, earth and spice on the nose. The wine is full bodied, concentrated and still tannic. The fruit is best described at noble. You can sense its good breeding. But there is an austerity and a hint of under ripeness in the finish that takes away from the wine. The long, rich, cassis and rhubarb filled finish is joy, but the sense of under ripeness takes away from the pleasure. Fans of older, more traditional, less ripe wines will like this more than I did.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Broodingly backward and in need of considerable bottle age, the 1988 is a classic expression of Lafite. This deeply-coloured wine exhibits the tell-tale Lafite bouquet of cedar, subtle herbs, dried pit fruits, minerals, and cassis. Extremely concentrated, with brilliantly focused flavours and huge tannins, this backward, yet impressively endowed Lafite-Rothschild may well turn out to be the wine of the vintage.

Fairly deep violet colour. Inky colour. Very Cabernet nose. Smooth and slightly marked by the dancing elegance characteristic of Lafite. Soft attack and fairly dry finish, but very respectable and true to the vintage. Quite long.

Château Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild, 1st growth classified in 1855, is one of the most renowned Bordeaux châteaux. It shares the top of the official 1855 classification with the greatest estates. Located in the Pauillac appellation, the 103-hectare vineyard is divided into three plots: the slopes surrounding the château, the Carruades plateau to the west, and a 4.5-hectare plot in the neighbouring commune of Saint-Estèphe. The majority of the terroir consists of fine, deep gravel mixed with wind-blown sand on a tertiary limestone base. The grape varieties are 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines for the grand vin is 40 years, with the 20 hectares of young vines (less than 10 years old) being used for the second wine. There are also extremely old plots of over 80 years, one called 'La Gravière' even dating back to 1886. The wine is aged for 18 to 20 months in 100% new oak barrels. Lafite Rothschild produces approximately 15,000 to 20,000 cases per year. The estate also produces a second wine, Carruades de Lafite, with around 25,000 to 30,000 cases. The name of Château Lafite Rothschild's second wine comes from the 'Carruades plateau', the location of a group of plots that was purchased by the château in the 19th century, adjacent to the château's hillock. 'Carruades de Lafite' was formerly called 'Moulin des Carruades', before taking on the name Carruades de Lafite.

The legendary vintages of Château Lafite Rothschild are 1921, 1945, 1959, 1982, 1986, 1988 and 2000, 2005 in recent years.
