DEISS MARCEL

Marcel Deiss

The Marcel Deiss estate is located in Bergheim in the Grand-Est. The wines are original thanks to the practice of biodynamics on all 32 hectares of the vineyard. The yields are low with the return to the old Alsatian wine tradition of Contemplation. This is based on adaptation to the terroir and not to the grape varieties.

The wines are mellow, well balanced with a touch of acidity.

The history of Domaine Marcel Deiss:

Domaine Marcel Deiss was founded in Bergheim, Alsace, shortly after World War II by Marcel Deiss, driven by a desire to revive the family vineyard. In the 1970s, his son Jean-Michel Deiss took over the estate and initiated a major transformation, focusing on co-planting (multiple grape varieties in the same plot) to fully express the terroir.

A pioneer of biodynamics in Alsace, Jean-Michel banned chemical inputs in favor of a vibrant, artisanal viticulture. Today, the estate covers 32 hectares and 220 plots, all cultivated with the utmost care. His son, Mathieu Deiss, has taken over, perpetuating the family and terroir spirit, making the estate one of the most emblematic in the region.

What are the characteristics of Domaine Marcel Deiss wines?

The estate's wines are distinguished by their authenticity and respect for the terroir. They are made from 13 Alsatian grape varieties grown together, without weedkillers or chemical fertilizers. The vinifications are natural, without additives, allowing for a pure expression of the terroir.

The best vintages from the Marcel Deiss estate:

Among the remarkable cuvées are:

  • Altenberg de Bergheim Grand Cru 2018: rated 18/20 by La Revue du Vin de France "Majestic Altenberg, caressing and full of integrity, whose soft and tender palate is bursting with savory and endless flavors."
  • Mambourg Grand Cru 2020: rated 95+/100 by Robert Parker "The 2020 Mambourg Grand Cru offers a beautifully limpid and pure nose, but also intensely aromatic with aromas of kumquat and bitter orange."

Food and Wine Pairings

The estate's wines pair harmoniously with refined dishes such as foie gras, poultry, or mature cheeses like Comté or Munster.
