James Suckling October - 2023
James Suckling
Very complex nose of melted butter, sealing wax, toasted baguette and caramelised pear. Rich and silky on the full-bodied palate where there's a lot more citrus fruit and freshness than in the nose. Then comes a wave of salty minerality that adds another layer of tension to the extraordinary finish. A field blend of traditional varieties, focused on the pinot family of grapes. From organically grown grapes with Ecocert certification. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Grand Cru Mambourg offers a beautifully clear and pure but also intensely aromatic nose of kumquat and bitter orange aromas. On the palate, this is a saline, powerful, tight and concentrated as well as juicy Mambourg Pinot Gris with remarkable finesse and a certain texture and generosity that I do not get today from the 2019 and 2018. At this stage, I really like it, and it is my favourite of the 2018-2020 trio today, even though Mathieu Deiss disagrees and opts for the 2019. 14.3% alcohol. Natural cork.

Marcel Deiss

Domaine Marcel Deiss is one of the most emblematic and distinctive estates in Alsace viticulture, renowned for its deeply terroir-focused vision and unique interpretation of great Alsatian wines. Located in Bergheim, in the heart of the Haut-Rhin, the estate has established itself over several decades as an essential reference for understanding the expression of Alsatian soils at the highest level.

The vineyard extends over approximately 32 hectares, a large part of which is classified as Alsace Grand Cru, with emblematic plots such as Altenberg de Bergheim, Schoenenbourg, Engelgarten and Mambourg. Unlike the traditional approach centred on grape variety, Marcel Deiss favours a plot-based and geological reading of wine, placing terroir above all else.

The estate is managed using organic and biodynamic farming methods, a long-standing commitment aimed at preserving the natural balance of soils and vine vitality. The plantings are often carried out in complantation, combining several grape varieties on the same plot in order to more faithfully translate the identity of the place.

The wines of Domaine Marcel Deiss are distinguished by their depth, complexity and great ageing potential. Outstanding vintages such as Domaine Marcel Deiss 2006, Domaine Marcel Deiss 2020, Domaine Marcel Deiss 2008, Domaine Marcel Deiss 2015, Domaine Marcel Deiss 2022 illustrate the consistency and qualitative ambition of the estate, which has become an absolute reference for lovers of great Alsace wines.
