The 2012 Faugères Les Grandes Bastides d'Alquier comes from the top of the domaine's gray schist slopes and is mostly Syrah, with some old-vine Grenache and Mourvèdre. Aged two years in barrique (roughly 50% new), it shows developed aromas of dried cherries and cigar box, with plenty of vanilla, but it also hints of licorice and roasted meat. It's medium to full-bodied, with supple tannins, a creamy, mellow mouthfeel and remarkably mouthwatering length on the finish.

The Domaine Bardi d'Alquier, formerly Domaine Jean-Michel Alquier, took this name in 2018 when Sophie and Thibaud Bardi de Fourtou took over. Established in the heart of the village of Faugères since 1870, the Alquier family has shaped, vintage after vintage, a demanding and singular vision of this Hérault terroir that few domaines in France are able to express with such depth.

The modern history of the domaine begins in 1962, when Gilbert Alquier planted the first massale-selection syrahs of the appellation on his schist hillsides — syrahs of Rhône origin, at a time when the Languedoc was still placing its bets on high-yielding grape varieties. His son Jean-Michel then forged, over forty years of uncompromising rigour, a national and international reputation that elevated the domaine to two-star status in the Revue du Vin de France. Sophie and Thibaud Bardi de Fourtou continue along this same trajectory with equal dedication.

The twelve-hectare vineyard, planted at 340 metres altitude on schist within the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc, is certified organic. The flagship cuvée, Grandes Bastides, is produced in very limited quantities in only the vintages that merit it, aged twenty-four months in barrels, and intended for a cellaring potential of fifteen to twenty years. Vintages such as 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022 are among the most accomplished and most sought-after from the domaine.
