Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Even inkier in colour than the 2010, the 2009 Ermitage le Meal is as good as Hermitage gets. Locked and loaded with phenomenal notes of jammy black raspberries, crème de cassis, crushed violets, smoked earth and spice, it's thick and unctuous on the palate, with incredible density, a huge mid-palate and a layered, multi-dimensional, seamless, elegant texture that just keeps you coming back and begging for another sip. More hedonistic and voluptuous than the 2010, it should still evolve for just as long, yet have even a broader drink window.

This red almost gushes with ripe plum, cassis, blackberry and black currant fruit, but stays harnessed, with spice-tinged grip, a tarry spine and a piercing cassis bush– and iron-inflected finish that will need cellaring to fully unfurl. The better of two bottles tasted.

Gismondi on Wine : There's not a lot to choose from between Le Méal and Le Pavillon in 2009 in terms of quality. Here there's a smoky, peppery, garrigue, liquorice, animal, black cherry nose flecked with barnyard, tobacco, leather, floral, waxy, vanilla, savoury floral notes. The attack is smooth, fresh, juicy and slightly tannic with more peppery, smoky, savoury, black cherry, vanilla, orange, meaty, spicy, floral, blueberry, liquorice flavours. Long, elegant, warm and juicy which should age well over the next 10-20 years. Very fine.

You might think it sacrilege to broach this so young but it was extremely welcoming even at this young age. Dark ruby, dusty and dry and savoury but with great fruit concentration and rigour. Long and jewelly with so much noble fruit you are quite confident it has a great future. Rich and peppery. Serious stuff with great tannin handling. Lots of tannins here but not aggressively so. Very well made with a reverberant finish.

M. Chapoutier
M. Chapoutier

Founded in 1808 in Tain-l'Hermitage, the house of M. Chapoutier is today the leading owner of the Hermitage hill. Since 1990, Michel Chapoutier has cultivated the vines using biodynamic methods and bottles separately the great named sites of the hillside — Le Pavillon, L'Ermite, Le Méal — as single-parcel selections of syrah and marsanne. Since 1996, each label bears the name of the wine in Braille, as a tribute to Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne.

Among the house's great vintages, the 1989 vintage and the 1990 rank among the pinnacles of Hermitage, while the 2003, the 2009 and the 2021 vintage continue this pursuit of excellence across more recent years. These are wines of very long ageing potential, to be decanted and served with roasted meat or game.
