This is an utterly delicious wine! A languid, almost sedate bouquet whose charms creep up on you, with macerated black cherries, clear honey, blackcurrant wine gums, glycerol and a touch of rose petal, strafed with breathtaking delineation, the palate is full-bodied, exuding a sense of controlled opulence. Cashmere tannins, quite glossy and plush with immense purity and class. Rounded towards the finish with sweet black cherries mixed with summer fruits, great tension and poise. I doubt I will ever encounter a finer example of this wine. Drink now-2020. Tasted June 2009.

Still structured, tightly knit with a lot of vitality despite being 50 years old. Incredible how fresh this bottle is and how the dried fruit characters and tobacco, cedar notes linger on the palate. Drinking well now but it should keep for another 8-10 years easily.

On opening, the wine is black, opaque, mysterious. The nose provides the first answers. It does not reveal all its secrets immediately, it needs a little time but one senses the elegance, the richness, the minerality and the black fruit, all wrapped in fine, exotic essence. The palate is very concentrated, rich, perfectly balanced, subtle and long. What a delight!

Château Latour

Château Latour is one of the most iconic estates of the Pauillac appellation and a founding reference in the history of Bordeaux viticulture. Its name appears as early as the 14th century, linked to the presence of a watchtower on the Gironde estuary, whose proximity still profoundly shapes the identity of the vineyard. As early as the 18th century, the wines of Château Latour were recognised for their consistency and their capacity for ageing, establishing themselves among the greatest wines of the Médoc.

Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 classification, Château Latour holds a central place at the very top of the Bordeaux hierarchy. The estate is built on a particularly homogeneous terroir of deep gravels, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which lends the wines a powerful structure, remarkable depth and a great consistency of expression.

The signature of Château Latour is defined by a dense tannic architecture and an exacting construction, favouring precision and longevity over immediate seduction. The estate has withdrawn from en primeur sales: it keeps its bottles at the property and releases them only at maturity. This patience is evident in its legendary years — from the 1945 vintage to the wine of 1961, from 1982 to 1990 through to 2009 — all of which illustrate the estate's ability to express with consistency the excellence of the Pauillac terroir and the singularity of its style.
