Wine Spectator November - 1998
Wine Spectator
Though this has always been an outstanding '88, I never thought it was classic quality--but this wine proves otherwise. Ink-coloured, with an impressive concentration of mineral, currant and berry flavours. Full-bodied, with huge, velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish.

Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
A good vintage, the first of an exceptional trio, that remains well structured at this point, with rose petals, fennel and grilled sage, cracked pepper, cedar, cassis and loganberry, starting to soften its tannic grip but still clearly delivering Latour confidence.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The best showing yet for a wine from this under-rated vintage, the dark garnet-colored 1988 Latour reveals slight amber at the edge. A bouquet of melted tar, plums, black currants, cedar, and underbrush is followed by a sweet entry, with medium to full body, excellent ripeness, and mature tannin. It is a classic, elegant Latour with more meaty, vegetable-like flavors than are found in a riper year, such as 1989 and 1990. The 1988 has just begun to enter its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for 25 years. Anticipated maturity: now-2025.

Tom Cannavan January - 2004

Much more intense than Mouton. Rich blackberry/cassis plus roasted coffee on nose. Still very tight and quite austere this needs another 5 yrs+. Similar traditional style of Pauillac to Mouton.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Tobacco, earth, cassis and spicy aromatics are the first thing you notice. The wine has a rustic feel in the mouth. It is solid and four square in style, finishing with cassis flavours. This will last, but I am not sure it's going to improve.

Dark colour, of medium intensity and very evolved. Moderately aromatic nose, with a touch of tar. Tender palate, still fruity, fragrant, finishing with medium length and a hint of cedar.

Deep crimson. Looks more youthful than the 1994. Fireworks fragrance. A little gentler and suppler than the 1998. Softening. Very correct and very typical.

Château Latour
Château Latour

Château Latour is one of the most iconic estates in the Pauillac appellation and a founding reference in Bordeaux wine history. Its name dates back to the 14th century, linked to the presence of a watchtower on the Gironde estuary, whose proximity continues to profoundly mark the identity of the vineyard. From the 18th century onwards, the wines of Château Latour have been recognised for their consistency and ageing ability, establishing themselves among the greatest wines of the Médoc.

Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 classification, Château Latour occupies a central position at the pinnacle of the Bordeaux hierarchy. The estate is built upon particularly homogeneous deep gravel terroir, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives the wines a powerful structure, remarkable depth and great consistency of expression.

The signature of Château Latour is distinguished by a dense tannic architecture and demanding construction, favouring precision and longevity over immediate appeal. Iconic vintages such as Château Latour 1945, Château Latour 1961, Château Latour 1990, Château Latour 1996, Château Latour 2000 and Château Latour 2009 illustrate the estate's ability to consistently express the excellence of the Pauillac terroir and the singularity of its style.
