Cellar Tracker October - 2013
Cellar Tracker
Browning red in the meniscus. Bright, light colour, grenade shimmers in the translucent core. Quiet but very pretty nose of decaying leaves, iron, boudin, tofee, dry currants, dried flowers, cold tea. Hint of dates in the back. This is an old wine, baring ditto acidity. Refreshing, yet a tad sharp, pointy. Elegant and earthy. Old, but certainly not dead yet.

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Bright red, very pale. On the nose bouillon and malt, slightly dusty, rosehips, dried plums, tea aromas, with more air liquorice and black bread. On the palate gentle, very mature, still with delicate fruit, melted tannin, fine acidity structure - overall very thin and with little length but quite drinkable.

Château Gruaud Larose

Château Gruaud Larose is one of the major historic estates of the Saint-Julien appellation, classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. Founded in the 18th century, the château quickly established itself as a Médoc reference, driven by an ambitious quality vision and a reputation that has extended far beyond the borders of Bordeaux.

Planted on deep gravel terroirs resting on clay-limestone subsoils, the vineyard benefits from an ideal environment for the expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape variety in the blend, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This combination gives the wines of Gruaud Larose a pronounced structure, marked aromatic depth and remarkable ageing capacity.

The château is also distinguished by its philosophy summarised in the estate's historic motto: "The King of Wines, the Wine of Kings". Over several decades, significant investments have been made in both vineyard and cellar, with particular attention paid to sustainability, biodiversity and precision in winemaking.

Emblematic vintages such as Château Gruaud Larose 1928, Château Gruaud Larose 1945, Château Gruaud Larose 1982, Château Gruaud Larose 1986, Château Gruaud Larose 1990, Château Gruaud Larose 1991, Château Gruaud Larose 2000, Château Gruaud Larose 2005, Château Gruaud Larose 2009 perfectly illustrate the estate's style: powerful, refined wines, both full-bodied and elegant, now highly sought after in the collectible wine market.
