Jeannie Cho Lee April - 2011

Fairly deep garnet in colour, the 1991 has gorgeous tertiary aromas - potpourri, cassis, cedar, ripe plums - but on the palate, the wine is rather thin, with an astringent finish. Given how difficult the vintage was, this wine is holding up pretty well. Supple on the palate with light body and good acidity, it's a perfect food wine, to be enjoyed now.

Dark but already evolved. Clear. Medium intensity. Fine. Fruity. Fresh. Very spicy and complex. Clear. Intense. Same register. Clean and supple attack developing on a powerful, ample and very fruity structure that evolves richly on tannins that taste strongly of sage and bay leaf and leave a concentrated, tannic, long, flavourful and rich finish with a blackberry flavour. Beautiful complete wine. Successful.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted at the château at their "-1" vertical, the Gruaud '91 has far more ripeness and richness than you would expect for this off-vintage. Very good lift with mulberry, wild strawberry and a faint touch of peppermint. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition and vigour although there is some hardness to the tannins that is not quite in synch with the fruit towards the slightly astringent finish.

Chewy and rich with a black cherry and currant character. Almost full-bodied, with a lovely supple texture.

Château Gruaud Larose

Château Gruaud Larose is one of the major historic estates of the Saint-Julien appellation, classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. Founded in the 18th century, the château quickly established itself as a Médoc reference, driven by an ambitious quality vision and a reputation that has extended far beyond the borders of Bordeaux.

Planted on deep gravel terroirs resting on clay-limestone subsoils, the vineyard benefits from an ideal environment for the expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape variety in the blend, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This combination gives the wines of Gruaud Larose a pronounced structure, marked aromatic depth and remarkable ageing capacity.

The château is also distinguished by its philosophy summarised in the estate's historic motto: "The King of Wines, the Wine of Kings". Over several decades, significant investments have been made in both vineyard and cellar, with particular attention paid to sustainability, biodiversity and precision in winemaking.

Emblematic vintages such as Château Gruaud Larose 1928, Château Gruaud Larose 1945, Château Gruaud Larose 1982, Château Gruaud Larose 1986, Château Gruaud Larose 1990, Château Gruaud Larose 1991, Château Gruaud Larose 2000, Château Gruaud Larose 2005, Château Gruaud Larose 2009 perfectly illustrate the estate's style: powerful, refined wines, both full-bodied and elegant, now highly sought after in the collectible wine market.
