Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
An intense toasty nose of cassis, blackberry and wet sand. A firm, well-structured palate with well-integrated tannins. Savory mid-palate, saturated with a lot of glycerin. Very harmonious with good grip on the finish. Classy, sophisticated wine. A deep garnet hue. An attractive nose that reminds me more of a 1996 than 1995: austere, tobacco and cedar with a touch of ginger. Well-balanced on the medium-bodied palate, though not as ambitious or as decadent as today's Pontet-Canet. Quite earthy and Grave-like on the finish. Still not quite at its plateau of maturity

Blackish with some notes of purple still! Intense nose. Round and gamey without quite the freshness of some 1995s and 1996s tasted alongside. Different! Tannins no longer in the way. I think this needs drinking.

Evolved colour, of good intensity. Bouquet nose. Pleasant, juicy, flavoursome palate, but medium-bodied. Simple finish.

Ruby with some bricking in colour, tobacco, smoke, cassis, coffee and gravel make up the perfume. Structured, traditional, tannic and on the stern side of the style range, the rustic tannins are a little drying. Time could help soften the wine, but it will always be austere.

Château Pontet Canet
Château Pontet Canet

Château Pontet Canet is a Bordeaux wine estate. The 80-hectare vineyard is located in the heart of the Pauillac appellation, not far from Château Mouton Rothschild. Château Pontet Canet is classified as a fifth growth in the 1855 classification.

The wines of Pontet-Canet have always been part of the Médoc legend. Deep ruby, purple, sometimes black, Pontet-Canet wine develops a characteristic nose where black fruits, especially blackcurrant, liquorice, prune, notes of figs, cedar and sometimes cocoa blend together. On tasting, the wine combines power and elegance, density and amplitude. With a muscular character, it imposes a serene idea of classicism with its tannic structure that reveals a long and peaceful ageing potential. The men of Pontet-Canet continuously pursue the work undertaken more than three centuries ago, bringing, in each era, the most advanced techniques with an eternal concern to improve the quality of the wine while respecting and expressing the purest expression of the terroir.

The wine of Pontet-Canet, as well as the second wine, Les Hauts de Pontet-Canet, are exclusively sold by wine merchants in Bordeaux.
