Double decanted. This new tasting (the third) confirms that this vintage of Mission Haut-Brion is tasting particularly well today. It also reveals to us that it is not because a Bordeaux begins its life with firmness that it never acquires softness. This wine, whose rather energetic profile in its youth I remember very well, is proof of this. The colour is dark, intense and still young. Superb creamy and fruity nose. It smells of blackcurrant cream, smoke. It wins me over with its pure note. In absolute terms, it resembles Pomerol more than Pessac-Léognan. Rich, slender and fleshy palate, but on a straight body rather than broad. It is quite astonishing. The wine reveals itself after the mid-palate where it becomes flavourful and finishes very long on tannins without harshness. Delicious to drink at the moment. It will likely be long-lived.

A deep garnet core, very clean. This has a glorious, very pure and beautifully defined nose with the austerity of '88 claret but with much more fruit intensity than others. Lovely tobacco scents, cigar box. The palate is medium-bodied, understated, beautifully balanced with great precision and focus. Good acidity lending this Mission such vivacity with just that right degree of dryness on the finish to urge you to take another sip. A lovely La Mission and I bet a relative bargain compared to other vintages. Drink now-2020+. Tasted May 2008.

Medium ruby. Complex, delicately fragrant nose, peppery notes, floral tones, autumn leaves, tobacco, eucalyptus, even a touch of Habanero chilli over it, exciting. On the palate taut, juicy, has a medium body and shows structure, somewhat flaky tannins, plus a ripe acidity. Finishes long. A classic Bordeaux, perhaps a touch too rustic, but I personally like that.

Very deep, solid colour. Lovely mélange of camphor, cedar and that ashy minerality with keen-edged black fruit. The palate has delightfully racy structure, with fresh, but dense and meaty black fruit and a supple, supportive tannin structure. There is masses of toasty, coffeeish oak in the finish, but the balance here, with spiciness and acidity, is excellent.

Better on the nose, with its array of smoke, tar, wet earth, cedar, cassis, tobacco and cherry tones, than on the full bodied palate, which is on the strict, old school, stern side of the style range. Time can heal, but it won't fix everything here. At 30 years of age, it is what it is.

Dark crimson with ruby rim. Lovely mellow, very slightly faded nose but hugely complex and enjoyable. Then on the palate rather pronounced acidity and dry tannins – very 1988! Dry and dusty. Will probably always be a bit painful to drink! But actually in the glass it opened out and smoothed itself.

Château La Mission Haut Brion
Château La Mission Haut Brion

Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of the most iconic estates in Pessac-Léognan, renowned for the depth, longevity and singularity of its red and white wines. Classified as a Cru Classé de Graves, the château shares with its illustrious neighbour Château Haut-Brion a long history and an exceptional terroir, whilst asserting its own stylistic identity, often described as more powerful and more earthy.

Planted on deep gravelly soils mixed with clay and sand, the vineyard benefits from a grape variety mix dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for the reds, complemented by Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc for the whites. This diversity allows for precise blending, giving rise to wines of great aromatic intensity, structured yet always balanced.

Since its integration into the Dillon family fold, La Mission Haut-Brion has undergone exemplary modernisation of its facilities whilst maintaining a respectful approach to the terroir. The winemaking is carried out with great precision, aiming to preserve the expression of the soil and the purity of the fruit.

Major vintages such as the 1947 red wine, the 1949 vintage, Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1982, the mythical 1989 wine, the 1990 vintage, the 2000 wine, Château La Mission Haut-Brion 2010, illustrate the estate's ability to produce exceptional age-worthy wines, sought after on the fine wine collector's market and recognised for their remarkable evolution over the decades.
