expert's opinions

(10.2018) The 2015 Côte Rôtie Côte Brune boasts beautiful aromas of violets, herbs and raspberries, but wow, is this wine tannic. It's full-bodied but closed down tight on the palate. It's possible to admire the structure now—the crisp, refreshing acids, the firm, chewy tannins, the incredible length of the finish—but this will need 10+ years to loosen up. Yet I've no doubt that it will be stupendous 20 years out from the vintage and last for at least a decade more.

Jancis Robinson September - 2022

A brilliant, intoxicating nose that harnesses the ripeness of the vintage by melding riper, darker fruit tones with powerful dried herbs and peppery spice from the stems. Multi-faceted with sweet and savoury meeting in the middle. Smoky, with a rich texture from bold but ripe tannins, it manages crunch and sweetness at once. Outstanding.

Domaine Jamet

Domaine Jamet is one of the great icons of the northern Rhône Valley. Founded in 1950 by Joseph Jamet with a modest plot of 0.35 hectares on the Côte Brune, the domaine initially sold its harvest to négociants before the first bottlings in 1976, the year Jean-Paul joined the estate. After the vineyard was developed by brothers Jean-Paul and Jean-Luc, followed by their amicable separation in 2013, Jean-Paul has continued the venture with his wife Corinne and their son Loïc, the third generation of winemakers.

Established at the lieu-dit "Le Vallin", on the plateau behind Ampuis, the domaine cultivates a true mosaic of plots scattered across the steep hillsides of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, laid out in terraces on predominantly schist soils. This parcel diversity lies at the heart of the Jamet style: rather than fashionable single-vineyard cuvées, the domaine champions the blending of terroirs to express the full complementarity of the cru. Vinification is traditional, with a significant proportion of whole-bunch grapes, indigenous yeasts and a patient, measured ageing process.

The flagship cuvée remains the "classic" Côte-Rôtie, complemented by the rare Côte Brune, the Fructus Voluptas cuvée, a Condrieu Vernillon vinified by Loïc since 2015, as well as Côtes du Rhône and IGP Collines Rhodaniennes. Deep and marked by notes of black olive and smoke, with an immense ageing potential, the Syrahs from Domaine Jamet rank among the most sought-after wines in the Rhône Valley.
