expert's opinions

Wow, this has really blossomed with time in the bottle. With just a bit of lightness to the colour starting to shine though, there is a richness and silkiness found in the fruit that makes this impossible not to want to take another sip. Rich and seductive, the wine is elegant, supple, long, and fresh. There is a refreshing minty note on the palate that accompanies the sweet fruit adding complexity and pleasure. You can start drinking this now, or age it for a few more years and enjoy it for at least 2 decades or more after that. Drink from 2025-2045.

Jean-Marc Quarin September - 2023

Dark colour, intense and slightly evolved. Very aromatic nose, fruity with a hint of lactic character. Would have benefited from decanting. Delicate on the entry, very aromatic in the mid-palate, with class in the texture, the wine melts on the palate, with a meticulous and perfumed grain. Long, delicate and almost fragile finish. Pity about the nose.

Open, accessible and incredibly supple. Classic Brane-Cantenac, still shy and not expressive but there is great substance here with firm structure. Fairly long finish.

Falstaff February - 2020

Dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, delicate lightening at the rim. Subtle herbal spice, tobacco nuances, blackberries and dark cherry, fresh orange zest. Juicy, fine berry fruit, ripe, silky tannins, good freshness, fine lemony-saline touch on the finish, elegant and persistent, a great food companion with certain further ageing potential. Already drinkable now, but better to wait.

Ripe and fleshy, with an enticing mix of linzer torte, currant confiture and crushed plum fruit offset by hints of briar and bay leaf. The long finish lets roasted apple wood, singed iron and tobacco leaf notes fill in, whilst staying plush in feel. Combines the ripeness of the vintage with a nice old-school feel.

Aired for 30 minutes. Not the perfumed Margaux nose i expected. Black fruit. Big middle and medium finish. Good balance of an aged Bordeaux. Faded after 90 minutes. Some solids in the bottom. Wine was stored perfectly since purchase. The score was for the first 90 minutes.

Château Brane Cantenac
Château Brane Cantenac

Château Brane-Cantenac is one of the great names of the Margaux appellation, classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 classification. Located on the gravelly plateau of Cantenac, in the heart of the Médoc, this wine embodies the elegance, aromatic precision and tannic finesse characteristic of the great Margaux wines.

The estate's history dates back to the 18th century, but its modern identity was established in the early 19th century when Baron Jacques-Maxime de Brane acquired the property and gave it his name. Known at the time as the "Napoleon of the vines", he helped elevate the cru among the Médoc's finest references. For several generations, the Lurton family has overseen the estate, pursuing a constant quest for precision and parcel expression.

The vineyard lies on hillcrests of deep gravel mixed with sand and clay, a terroir particularly favourable to Cabernet Sauvignon, the majority grape variety in the blend. This composition gives Château Brane-Cantenac wines a straight structure, refined aromatic intensity and remarkable ageing potential.

Vintages such as Château Brane-Cantenac 1989, Château Brane-Cantenac 2000, Château Brane-Cantenac 2005, Château Brane-Cantenac 2009, Château Brane-Cantenac 2016 or Château Brane-Cantenac 2020 illustrate the cru's consistent quality and its unmissable status among Margaux's collectible wines.
