Wine Enthusiast January - 2005
Wine Enthusiast
A rich, grand vin, from a vintage that owner Henri Lurton describes as classic. It displays powerful yet soft tannins, robust black fruit aromas, and beautiful maturity, without losing sight of the balance between richness, dryness, and acidity. This is a wine that will age for a long time.

Both on the nose and palate, notes of blackberry and tobacco abound. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Remarkably concentrated for the vintage, yet remarkably fine.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Medium bodied, finesse styled wine with a fresh, soft, elegant, cherry, tobacco and earthy character. Lots of charm, and fragrance, but not a lot of depth. The wine was made from a blend with an unusually high percentage of Merlot: 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc.

Quite reserved at first, but elegant and seductive, with a nose of black fruits and raspberry; quite lively aromas, although a little closed. A fine and ample fruitiness, with a richness of black plum and a truly pleasant quality. Good tannins, this wine has a structure that is both open and warm.

Medium purple colour. Quite intense and concentrated nose. Smooth and very well-crafted attack. A bit chewy on the finish, but definitely very Margaux. More well-crafted than the Poujeaux.

Dark colour. Beautiful open and subtle nose evoking a great terroir. Immediately caressing palate, then velvety in the mid-palate and slender. In the finish, slightly greener sensations appear, introducing a sort of crackling on this beautiful melodious line.

Château Brane Cantenac
Château Brane Cantenac

Château Brane-Cantenac is one of the great names of the Margaux appellation, classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 classification. Located on the gravelly plateau of Cantenac, in the heart of the Médoc, this wine embodies the elegance, aromatic precision and tannic finesse characteristic of the great Margaux wines.

The estate's history dates back to the 18th century, but its modern identity was established in the early 19th century when Baron Jacques-Maxime de Brane acquired the property and gave it his name. Known at the time as the "Napoleon of the vines", he helped elevate the cru among the Médoc's finest references. For several generations, the Lurton family has overseen the estate, pursuing a constant quest for precision and parcel expression.

The vineyard lies on hillcrests of deep gravel mixed with sand and clay, a terroir particularly favourable to Cabernet Sauvignon, the majority grape variety in the blend. This composition gives Château Brane-Cantenac wines a straight structure, refined aromatic intensity and remarkable ageing potential.

Vintages such as Château Brane-Cantenac 1989, Château Brane-Cantenac 2000, Château Brane-Cantenac 2005, Château Brane-Cantenac 2009, Château Brane-Cantenac 2016 or Château Brane-Cantenac 2020 illustrate the cru's consistent quality and its unmissable status among Margaux's collectible wines.
