Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted at the chateau with Henri Lurton. Having had the 1961 Brane-Cantenac once before, my hopes were not astronomical since it never made a positive impression. However, this ex-chateau bottle is totally convincing. It has a mature hue. The nose is utterly compelling with black fruits, early grey, peppermint and violets with wonderful delineation and lift. The palate is divine: succinct balance and poise, touches of tea leaf and bay leaf inflecting the finish that has great depth and such fine tannins that blind, I would suspect this to be Château Margaux. Not as great as Palmer 1961, but just a fantastic mature Claret that is at point. Tasted April 2010.

Caressingly soft tannic structure, a whisper and a memory of tannins and fruit. This is Henri Lurton's birth year, and it's finesse in a bottle, with pure lace-like tannins, oyster shell salinity, soy, saffron, cardamom, campfire, raspberry purée, mouthwatering with grace, joy and lift.

Bright garnet red, transparent at the rim; on the nose of impressive finesse, spicy notes, tobacco, red fruits, black tea, floral nuances, cool fireplace; on the palate noble and still with fruit, the tannins completely dissolved, a fresh acidity provides support; very long finish. A magnificent aged wine experience.

Château Brane Cantenac
Château Brane Cantenac

Château Brane-Cantenac is one of the great names of the Margaux appellation, classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 classification. Located on the gravelly plateau of Cantenac, in the heart of the Médoc, this wine embodies the elegance, aromatic precision and tannic finesse characteristic of the great Margaux wines.

The estate's history dates back to the 18th century, but its modern identity was established in the early 19th century when Baron Jacques-Maxime de Brane acquired the property and gave it his name. Known at the time as the "Napoleon of the vines", he helped elevate the cru among the Médoc's finest references. For several generations, the Lurton family has overseen the estate, pursuing a constant quest for precision and parcel expression.

The vineyard lies on hillcrests of deep gravel mixed with sand and clay, a terroir particularly favourable to Cabernet Sauvignon, the majority grape variety in the blend. This composition gives Château Brane-Cantenac wines a straight structure, refined aromatic intensity and remarkable ageing potential.

Vintages such as Château Brane-Cantenac 1989, Château Brane-Cantenac 2000, Château Brane-Cantenac 2005, Château Brane-Cantenac 2009, Château Brane-Cantenac 2016 or Château Brane-Cantenac 2020 illustrate the cru's consistent quality and its unmissable status among Margaux's collectible wines.
