Yes, we are unconditional fans of this brand and regular consumers not only of the top cuvées, but also of the Cuvée Classic. Because they are always excellently made, technically precise, but also inspired and true to style. And because they still possess one of the best price/pleasure ratios in Champagne. This also applies, and quite especially, to the Cuvée William Deutz 2002, which is now at its peak: Superb, fruity-spicy aromas without a trace of heaviness, mineral notes, a hint of mirabelle plum; on the palate comes a perfect balance of breeding and fullness, fruitiness and minerality, as only very great vintages allow, in a now exactly right, stunningly sensual-generous manner... the absolute class for lovers of mature champagnes, in which not Chardonnay sets the tone, but Pinot Noir.

Predominantly made from Pinot Noir with Chardonnay and a little bit of Pinot Meunier, the 2002 Cuvée William Deutz Brut Millésimé is another highlight of the estate, if not the appellation. The bouquet of this Millésime is bright, very clear, fresh, aromatic and complex, whereas on the palate this is the quintessence of finesse, subtlety, purity and elegance. Sure, this is a structured wine, but it is made like a perfectly shaped antique Greek statue or a jewel. Everything here is perfectly interwoven and nothing stands out except the whole composition, which is perfectly balanced. The bouquet shows finest caramel and spicy oak notes along with white flowers and fine fruit flavours, whereas the palate of this medium-bodied and linear wine is firmly structured, fresh and absolutely delicate. The finish is pure and elegant, as well as complex and long. I would drink this outstanding champagne for its own merits.

A light cedary note and a touch of honey already, fresh ginger too, even a light note of red cherry. Purity and freshness with a nice balance between the off-dry character and bright acidity. A little more yeasty, even smoky, on the palate. Very fine texture. To be completely honest, I find a little too much sweetness on the finish even though the acidity helps to balance the richness. Were it not for this, I would have scored it a little higher.

 This certainly has more creaminess and an elegant white fruit character, but there is suppleness immediately suggested on the nose, that pillow of cream and gentle oatmeal. The structure on the palate is all framed around the acidity, again a savoury, quite tight character that is complex and gastronomic, but fruit is delightful, open and this is still juicy and so attractive.

Aromas of ripe apples, delicate pears and patisserie notes, followed by a mild, subtle herbal spice, nuances of yellow stone fruit and a hint of honey. On the palate, sweet pear notes, followed by greengages, a little honey, taut acidity, flanked by a fine citrus note with a savoury finish. A multifaceted, approachable accompaniment to food.
