The really good NV Philipponnat “Reserve Perpetuelle” Brut Champagne combines mainly Pinot Noir (67%) with a smaller part Chardonnay and a touch of Pinot Meunier. This is big and round on the mouth, drinking marvellously now with its refined mousse. Marzipan and gingerbread notes combine with hints of brioche and lemon rind on the palate. Enjoy now.

Philipponnat is a significant grower, with 20 hectares of Premier and Grand Cru Vineyards in Aÿ, Mareuil and Avenay. Pinot Noir represents two-thirds of their plantings and is the backbone of their cuvées. In this case the base vintage is 2019 with 67% Pinot Noir, 31% Chardonnay and 2% Meunier, though 34% of the blend is reserve wine. The dosage is a modest 8g/l and the wine was disgorged in February 2023. There's a pretty and approachable character here, a particularly fragrant floral and herbal lift to the aromas, then a nutty depth of autolysis fills in beneath. The mousse is cushioning and rich, and though the sheer sweetness and richness of the fruit gives lovely generosity through the mid-palate, there's no shortage of shimmering lemony and salty acidity into the finish.

On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, broad-shouldered and textural, delivering a generous, enveloping style energized by racy acidity. While the base vintage is vinified primarily in stainless steel, the reserve wines are stored in oak, and the wine undergoes partial malolactic fermentation.

Founded in Aÿ as early as 1522 and based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the Philipponnat house crafts vinous and precise Champagnes, dominated by Pinot Noir, from the Champagne appellation and Grand Cru classified terroirs. Its monopole Clos des Goisses, the first clos vinified separately in the region, encapsulates its spirit: terroir, structure and long ageing potential.

True to its perpetual reserve and measured dosage, the house produces gastronomic cuvées that stand the test of time. Among its great years, 1996, the 2002 vintage, the 2008 wine, 2015 and the 2020 wine illustrate the balance between vinosity and freshness.
