A superb Chasse-Spleen. A similar hue to the Lafon-Rochet but with a wider brick red rim. The palate is more floral and feminine with good complexity: cedar, forest floor, earth - all quite lifted and perfumed from the ripe Merlot. The palate is smooth, with well-knit tannins, good acidity, though with a touch of excess alcohol that lends the wine some bitterness. But after time in the glass, it harmonises and becomes more cohesive. Cedar and tobacco on the finish. Very focused.

The simplest of this range of a dozen 1990s, as one might expect. Bright ruby with a pale rim. Light nose suggesting slight herbaceousness. Sweetness underneath. Certainly aromatic but acidity nudging in on the finish. Cassis fruit is fading. But it's fairly persistent and certainly comforting. I think one would be delighted to be served this in isolation.

Château Chasse-Spleen is a 105-hectare wine estate. Chasse-Spleen produces one of the most remarkable wines of the Médoc, and certainly of the Moulis en Médoc appellation. The Château is classified as exceptional crus bourgeois in the first edition of the crus bourgeois classification. Established on four plots of quaternary gravel planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot,

The best vintages of Château Chasse-Spleen are 1929, the 1943 wines, 1945 wines, the 1949 vintage and 1953 vintage. The 1982 and 1985 vintages are exceptional and the 1989 wines, 2000 vintage and 2009 are exceptional years.
