Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
One of the superstar 1983s that is not beginning to crack up and decline, Leoville-Poyferre's effort exhibits a dark garnet color, a sweet nose of plum liqueur intermixed with licorice, black currants, weedy tobacco, and herbes de Provence. The wine is round, seductive, with a certain degree of opulence, low acidity, gorgeous fruit, and a nice layered palate impression. It makes for quite a seductive style of wine. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Last tasted, 3/02.

Tom Cannavan (01-1997) Very dense dark ruby/purple. Big nose of brambly, blackcurrant fruit. Very up-front and juicy on the palate Lush, super concentrated black fruits and a nice creaminess. A little more acidity than some others. Finish quite long, fairly smooth, cool and minty. Excellent concentration. A bit of a blockbuster for this rather restrained vintage.

Château Leoville Poyferre
Château Leoville Poyferre

Château Léoville Poyferré is a Bordeaux wine estate. Under the Saint Julien appellation, it is classified as a deuxième cru classé (Second Growth) in the official 1855 Médoc wine classification.

During the reign of Louis XIII, in 1638, Master Jean de Moytié, an ennobled Bordeaux bourgeois and counsellor to the Parliament of Bordeaux, owned a vineyard planted on a gravelly hill near the River. This led to the place being named "Mont-Moytié", following the custom of the time to name a place after its owner. The Mont-Moytié cru was part of these first historical crus of the Médoc, all born before the Fronde (1648-1653). The Médoc was then giving birth to its first parish crus.

This beautiful vineyard, originating from the former Léoville estate in the north of Saint-Julien, is one of the best terroirs of the appellation and certainly the richest of the second growths. The 80 hectares planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc produce a deep and rich wine.

Château Léoville Poyferré produces elegant, very fine, balanced and complex wines, with intense colour and velvety texture, which have a very good ageing potential.
