expert's opinions

Information on the vintage 1988 red Bordeaux : The first of a trio of very good vintages and the penultimate vintage of a more than interesting decade. This very good vintage is undervalued; but in the end, time and tannin will be jostling for supremacy.

Colour still quite dense. Lots of spicy cigar box and still meaty. Spicy on the tip of the tongue. Fragrant but a little sickly sweet as it opens up. Firm and yet smooth tannins. Very easy to drink because it finishes so fresh and fine.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
A garnet core, very clear in colour. The nose is typical of the vintage: masculine, reserved with notes of cigar box and pencil lead but with great delineation and freshness though it becomes more muffled and surprisingly gamey with ten or fifteen minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, very good acidity, much better than I supposed with good density and concentration on the finish. Austere? Only a little. Lovely grip on the gamey finish. Creditable for the vintage and should last a few years yet.

Château Leoville Poyferre
Château Leoville Poyferre

Château Léoville Poyferré is a Bordeaux wine estate. Under the Saint Julien appellation, it is classified as a deuxième cru classé (Second Growth) in the official 1855 Médoc wine classification.

During the reign of Louis XIII, in 1638, Master Jean de Moytié, an ennobled Bordeaux bourgeois and counsellor to the Parliament of Bordeaux, owned a vineyard planted on a gravelly hill near the River. This led to the place being named "Mont-Moytié", following the custom of the time to name a place after its owner. The Mont-Moytié cru was part of these first historical crus of the Médoc, all born before the Fronde (1648-1653). The Médoc was then giving birth to its first parish crus.

This beautiful vineyard, originating from the former Léoville estate in the north of Saint-Julien, is one of the best terroirs of the appellation and certainly the richest of the second growths. The 80 hectares planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc produce a deep and rich wine.

Château Léoville Poyferré produces elegant, very fine, balanced and complex wines, with intense colour and velvety texture, which have a very good ageing potential.
