The completeness of 2001, with its miraculous balance, is present in this wine. The acidity, ripe blackcurrants sit comfortably on top of dry tannins, the fleshiness of the fruit taking the edge off the tannins. It seems to bring out the structure, the fruit and the refreshing acidity of great Cabernet.

Soft and gentle leather, earth and spice, this is beautiful and balanced, with grilled cedar, soot, softened blackberry and bilberry notes, just a great reflection of St Julien finesse. A touch of bottle variation in the examples of this wine that I have tried over the past few years, but when they are good they are great. Lilting, juicy, a long slow burn, totally moreish. 80% new oak. When to drink: 2021 to 2036

Very beautiful dark red. Intense nose. Ripe. Fine. Creamy. On swirling, intense. Fine. Complex. Almost creamy wine on the palate, rounded and becoming juicy from the middle. Beautiful last part of the mouth, ripe, fresh and juicy, with a different structure from 2002. More flesh and power. When to drink: 2010 to 2027

Tobacco, cigar box, earth, mocha, espresso and blackberry aromas are right there when you want them. On the palate, the wine is soft, lush, silky, expressive and clean, plus it's drinking today.

Light, elegant, with violet and creamy, sweet cassis. Lovely purity here. The palate too is juicy and fresh with delightful, rich cassis and deeper plum juiciness. Fine concentration, but elegance with silky tannins and excellent structure.

Falstaff March - 2015

Strong ruby garnet, violet reflections, subtle rim lightening. Smoky-herbaceous blackberry confit, delicate cassis, subtle roasted aromas, candied orange zest. Medium complexity, fine morello cherry fruit, ripe, well-integrated tannin, shows good length, already approachable, a charming food companion.

Château Leoville Poyferre
Château Leoville Poyferre

Château Léoville Poyferré is a Bordeaux wine estate. Under the Saint Julien appellation, it is classified as a deuxième cru classé (Second Growth) in the official 1855 Médoc wine classification.

During the reign of Louis XIII, in 1638, Master Jean de Moytié, an ennobled Bordeaux bourgeois and counsellor to the Parliament of Bordeaux, owned a vineyard planted on a gravelly hill near the River. This led to the place being named "Mont-Moytié", following the custom of the time to name a place after its owner. The Mont-Moytié cru was part of these first historical crus of the Médoc, all born before the Fronde (1648-1653). The Médoc was then giving birth to its first parish crus.

This beautiful vineyard, originating from the former Léoville estate in the north of Saint-Julien, is one of the best terroirs of the appellation and certainly the richest of the second growths. The 80 hectares planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc produce a deep and rich wine.

Château Léoville Poyferré produces elegant, very fine, balanced and complex wines, with intense colour and velvety texture, which have a very good ageing potential.
