Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Served from ex-chateau double magnum at the Academie du Vin dinner...wow! I have had this several times from bottle, but this large format was in another league. The nose is vital and vivacious with attractive crisp blackberry and raspberry fruit, cedar, undergrowth and cigar box. The palate is beautifully balanced with the opulence you might expect to find on a 1982. There is a sense of bravado about this Beychevelle and a self-assurance that it is a great Saint Julien. Superb – this is a buccaneering Beychevelle!

Surprisingly fresh, complex and loaded with ripe, sweet dark red fruits, cedar wood, smoke, tobacco and cigar box aromatics that are present in the aromatics and in the finish.

Very evolved colour. Intense nose. Very beautiful. Fruity. Varied if not complex. Meat. Tobacco. Plum and especially cedar. Mellow, still very fruity, certainly the wine is a little flowing but its taste is quite unique and its tannicity without dryness makes it very pleasant to swallow. Drink it now without looking for great substance. Has managed to avoid the pitfalls of the year.

Very fresh and clean but rather lean, with berry flavor, medium body and firm tannins.

Château Beychevelle
Château Beychevelle

Château Beychevelle watches over the Gironde at the southern tip of Saint-Julien, where the legend of the "lower sail" gave it its name and the griffin-prowed ship its emblem. Classified in 1855, it draws from its deep Garonne gravels a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and owes its nickname of "Versailles of the Médoc" to its pleasure château.

Vinified plot by plot and aged in oak barrels, the wines combine silky tannins, dark fruit and great ageing potential. The landmark vintages of the estate range from 1982 and 1986 to 1989 for the great classics, then to 2005 and the 2016 vintage, the first to emerge from the new plot-by-plot winery. L'Amiral de Beychevelle offers the most accessible expression.
