Dark ruby core. Little signs of aging. Cassis/cedery nose is still tight but very classy. Smooth velvety structure, med/full bodied. Very concentrated with silky smooth tannins. Still youthful - a brilliant wine for the vintage. Will last another 10-15 years. Excellent.

3 hours bottle breathed, and this was still so fresh with an incredibly dark core.. I called out LB 1996! This 1983 Leoville Las Cases was singing as were all the wines that evening. Like a well oiled orchestra!! Supremely well balanced; Cassis and more blackfruit, acidity M+ and tannins rounded after 40 years! Nose : Ripe blackfruit and cassis, with unmistakable cigar box. As it takes on more air, and as my nose gets used to the complexities.. Graphite and pencil lead with old leather too. Palate : Blackfruits with plums developing after 1 hour too. Mid to full bodied. Very classical style. Tannins - Rounded. Acidity - Medium. Finish - Medium to long length.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Firm, austere, classic style of St. Julien here. The nose is packed with cedar, tobacco, cigar box, ash, wet, forest floor and bright red berries. Medium/full bodied, with a rusticity to the tannins that was common in that era. Still, this is fun to taste, when you're in the mood for the equivalent of an old, black and white, movie style of Bordeaux.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Like so many 1983s, this wine entered full maturity 6-7 years ago and now seems to be suggesting that it needs to be drunk up quickly, as the tannins and acidity continue to take hold, and as the fruit fades. The wine has a dark plum/garnet color with some amber at the edge. The wine is medium-bodied with a bit of sharpness in the finish. However, the aromas and attack of the wine are still intact, but consumption definitely seems warranted.

With time in a wine decanter it really opened out and by the time it was enjoyed with mallard at the JancisRobinson.com Christmas dinner it came into its minerally own with many a layer of subtlety – most notably on the nose.

Château Leoville Las Cases
Château Leoville Las Cases

The Château Léoville Las Cases is a french estate located in Saint Julien Beychevelle in Gironde. It is a second classified growth in Médoc classification of 1855.

Jean-Hubert Delon is not lacking in passion nor discipline. The vintages who marched during the past quarter century testify for him. In the Saint-Julien appellation, whether the wines are from in important vintage or a less significant one, they are without a doubt amongst the best. A property absolutely exemplary in the Bordeaux region. The largest of the three Léoville is certainly the greatest in quality and, in the opinion of many, it should be among the first growths. Michel Delon, the "Lord" as he was known, is largely responsible for this recognition.

Since 1976, when he succeeded his father, he worked to reconstruct the drainage of land, to modernize and expand the winery, monitor the performance of its vines. He had this deep attachment to land and work values. His son Jean-Hubert took over in 2000, following his disparition. Las Cases is a  typical Saint-Julien of rare nobility of expression and has a breathtaking structure.
