Somber red. Good intensity. Beautiful. Net. Fine. Fruity. Fresh and creamy. Finely grilled. It develops in roundness with density while the 2002 develops in length but ample with more precise steps. This 2001 has vivatiousness and a lot of concentration. Very nice length. For the first time it is superior to the 2002, more harmonius.

Dark crimson. Still quite blue. Intense and almost bloody on the nose. The usual obdurate Las Cases style! Not nearly ready. SO dry!!!! Hard work. Is there really enough fruit in here? I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt with my score.

Jean-Hubert Delon thinks the 2001 Leoville Las Cases could turn out to be as good as his 2000. I’m not sure I agree, but it may come close. A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.5% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2001 (which represents only 40% of the production) reveals notes of sweet vanillin intermixed with pure cassis, black cherries, and lead pencil shavings. Elegant and medium-bodied, it possesses a saturated purple color, high tannin, and a structured, backward feel in the mouth. This quintessentially elegant Las Cases needs another 5-7 years to hit its plateau of maturity. It will be one of the Medoc’s longest lived wines of the vintage.

This is very floral and perfumed with lots of violets, roses and berries. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a racy finish. Superfresh and long. Focused and clean.

Leoville Las Cases
Jean-Hubert Delon is not lacking in passion nor discipline. The vintages who marched during the past quarter century testify for him. In the Saint-Julien appellation, whether the wines are from in important vintage or a less significant one, they are without a doubt amongst the best. A property absolutely exemplary in the Bordeaux region. The largest of the three Léoville is certainly the greatest in quality and, in the opinion of many, it should be among the first growths. Michel Delon, the "Lord" as he was known, is largely responsible for this recognition. Since 1976, when he succeeded his father, he worked to reconstruct the drainage of land, to modernize and expand the winery, monitor the performance of its vines. He had this deep attachment to land and work values. His son Jean-Hubert took over in 2000, following his disparition.Las Cases is a  typical Saint-Julien of rare nobility of expression and has a breathtaking structure.
