CHÂTEAU LEOVILLE LAS CASES 1998

Best enjoyed between 2008 and 2041
Tasting note:
The 1998 vintage was characterized by early budding and flowering. The particularly hot and dry month of August then favored good grape ripening, which was not disrupted by the few rains that occurred in September during the harvest.

Grape variety/Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon (~54%), Merlot (~36%), Cabernet Franc (~7%), Petit Verdot (~3%) (variations may occur from one vintage to another)

Food and Wine Pairing: Château Léoville Las Cases wines pair perfectly with game, grilled meats whether red or white, and hard cheeses. For desserts, this red wine will pair perfectly with chocolate or coffee specialties.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1998 Léoville Las Cases is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet coloured with a touch of brick, it delivers pronounced, beautifully pure crème de cassis, blackberry preserves and prunes scents with an undercurrent of cigar box, liquorice, pencil lead and hoisin, plus a touch of espresso. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has impressive richness and depth, coating the mouth with velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy. Still very youthful, this wine is in that sweet spot where it has considerable evolution and yet bags of fruit. Drink it now and for the next 20 years+.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
This is developed well over the wines, putting on more weight and complexity. Now, you find a ready-to-go Las Cases delivering a complex set of aromatics; black and red currants, smoke, cigar box, wet earth, cedar, and tobacco. The wine is full, firm, stoic and also fresh. Classic in style, the finish is all about its freshness and lifted characteristics that come along with its chewy, bright, red, spicy fruits. An hour or 2 of air will help. The wine blends 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, 12.9% ABV.

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Powerful ruby. Ripe fruity nose, still quite youthful in character, liquorice, dark berries, cherries, Christmas biscuits, cool ash. On the palate straightforward, fresh, juicy, crisp fruit, noticeable yet fine tannin, still appears very youthful but balanced. Finishes more red-fruited than the nose suggests, spicy, very long. Now until 2038

Dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, broader rim lightening. Ripe plums, delicate chocolate note, subtly caramelised. Juicy, sweet fruit, firm tannins, a powerful wine, rather opulent style, delicate vegetal spice on the finish, slightly drying on the finish.

Deep inky garnet. Nose is closed. Minerally & backward. Palate is very well-balanced but tight. Good grip. Just prefer the 99 in sophistication but still very classy. Tasted at the château.

Château Leoville Las Cases
Château Leoville Las Cases

Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most iconic estates in the Saint-Julien appellation, renowned for the precision, depth and longevity of its wines. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it has distinguished itself for over a century through an uncompromising level of quality and consistency that places it at the very top of the Médoc hierarchy.

Originating from the former Léoville estate, the Château Léoville Las Cases vineyard is today protected by a historic enclosure — a rare distinction in Bordeaux — which guarantees a strong parcel identity. Situated on the immediate banks of the Gironde, facing the great terroirs of Pauillac, the estate benefits from a privileged environment conducive to slow, even ripening of the grapes.

The Grand Vin, often austere in its youth, requires many years of cellaring and boasts numerous highlights: the 1982 vintage, 1990 and the 1996 vintage among the great classics, 2000, the 2005 wine and the 2010 vintage for the more recent period. Alongside it, the Clos du Marquis, a wine in its own right sourced from neighbouring plots, and Le Petit Lion, a more approachable second wine, complete the estate's range.
