Wine Spectator November - 1998

A classic new style of Pichon-Baron, with rich, thick, velvety tannins and complex berry, currant and mint character. Full-bodied, it's extremely balanced for showing such impressive power. A real beauty.

A alluring nose - one which was packed with meatiness, smoke, cedar wood, licorice and blackcurrant - the bottle felt a tad more advanced on the palate. A tertiary upfront, I was immediately struck by the balance of sous bois and blackberries before the palate transitioned in its entirety during the mid-palate as notes of licorice and smoke came through. The finish was a tad astringent but a bark note emerged that balanced it out. A great bottle, but one I would drink up on now.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted at The Ledbury Bordeaux-themed lunch. Consistent notes as previous occasions: as straight down the line classic Pauillac with an unashamed graphite-scented nose, a rather tannic but very well balanced palate with a surfeit of freshness, crisp and “energetic” on the finish, even if it refuses to take off its tie and blazer. Tasted May 2010.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
I found this lone bottle during a recent cellar clean up. It was a nice surprise as it's fully ready to go. Classic in all the right ways, with its cedar wood, tobacco, smoke, cigar box, wet earth and cassis nose. The wine maintains a firm, rustic charm to its tannins, with notes of green olive and herbs poking through the crisp cassis finish. If you're seeking an old school experience, that is more correct than charming, this could be the wine you're looking for.

Château Pichon Longueville Baron
Château Pichon Longueville Baron

Classified a 2nd growth in 1855. The vineyard of Pichon Baron (as they called to distinguish it from its neighbor Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande) is situated right next to Chateau Latour on one of the finest vineyards in Pauillac. In the seventeenth century, Jacques de Pichon Longueville Baron, began to construct the vineyard of Pichon-Longueville. The reputation of the wine was established a few years later. The present castle was built in 1851 by Raoul de Pichon-Longueville. The wines of Château Pichon Baron come from this historic property. Resulting in full-bodied wine, rich in tannins, which are characterized by their finesse and elegance. Their length in the mouth is exceptional and they have a significant aging potential.
