The Château Grand Puy Lacoste 2005 has a brilliant, classic pencil-lead nose that is Pauillac through and through. There is no messin' about here. The palate is very well defined with wonderful acidity, great depth of black fruit with an astonishingly precise finish that just takes your breath away. Is it the best 2005 of the vintage? Not quite, but it belongs in the top tier. And factor in value for money, I would be happy sitting on a big pile of this in my cellar to drink over the rest of my lifetime and the afterlife if that exists too.

Dark colour, intense and slightly evolved. Very aromatic nose, with ripe and subtle fruit, evolving complex and inviting in the glass, with an astonishing touch of warm butter. Later, when swirled, it becomes fresher, more intense, younger, with a nuance of ink. Touch of caramel. Delicate on entry, delicate in the middle and frankly delicious, with presence and lots of taste, whilst remaining moderate in its breadth, the wine evolves juicy and noble despite a still slightly tight structure. Very fine length. One can begin to taste it. Blend: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot.

Expressive, yet stoic, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated, tannic and filled with tobacco-drenched creme de cassis, red plums, cedar, wet earth, cigar wrapper and forest leaf. Youthful, fresh and still waiting for its prime time window, two hours of decanting or 3-4 years in the cellar will do the trick.

One of the 2005s that I have drunk most regularly, and it always delivers. Still on top form for this tasting, dark ruby in colour, primary in its fruit expression. Tightrope balance of fruit and tannins, just emerging into its drinking window. Pencil lead, smoked earth, sandalwood, spice, eucalyptus, mint, pencil lead, cassis. A 40 year wine from this point on. Appellation signature in a glass. Needs carafing to fully open up, and then it's game on.

Château Grand Puy Lacoste

Château Grand-Puy Lacoste is a Bordeaux wine estate. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Médoc Classification, the Château has no less than hectares of vines.

The château also produces a second wine: Lacoste-Borie. It is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and of course Merlot grape varieties. 

The finest years of Château Grand-Puy Lacoste are undoubtedly 1947, the 1949 wines, the 1959, 1970, and 1982 vintages. Finally, the 1986, 1990 vintages, the 1994 wines and 2009 grand crus are excellent.
