Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1995 St.-Joseph Les Granites (made from the same 80-year old parcel of vines as the 1996) is rich and full-bodied, with loads of glycerin, and a distinct minerality combined with the apricot-peach-like fruit. It is a gloriously dense, powerful, yet elegant white St.-Joseph that, along with the 1996, should age for 10-15 years. Both the 1995 and 1996 St.-Josephs are reference point-breakthrough wines that establish a new level of quality for this appellation. Both wines are totally barrique-aged, of which one-third is new oak.

M. Chapoutier
M. Chapoutier

Founded in 1808 in Tain-l'Hermitage, the house of M. Chapoutier is today the leading owner of the Hermitage hill. Since 1990, Michel Chapoutier has cultivated the vines using biodynamic methods and bottles separately the great named sites of the hillside — Le Pavillon, L'Ermite, Le Méal — as single-parcel selections of syrah and marsanne. Since 1996, each label bears the name of the wine in Braille, as a tribute to Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne.

Among the house's great vintages, the 1989 vintage and the 1990 rank among the pinnacles of Hermitage, while the 2003, the 2009 and the 2021 vintage continue this pursuit of excellence across more recent years. These are wines of very long ageing potential, to be decanted and served with roasted meat or game.
