CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1990

To drink between 2000 and 2055
The label of this Mouton Rothschild 1990 pays tribute to the English artist Francis Bacon and one of his last works.
A painting that is at once mysterious and intriguing, revealing on a dark background muscular bodies that stretch and contract as if in a distorting mirror. This dynamic and moving work reflects the artist's love of wine.
Château Mouton Rothschild 1990 offers evolved aromas of blond tobacco and game, along with mineral notes that are absolutely pleasant. This premier cru classé is composed of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 9% Merlot.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The wine displays a brick colour with subtle, compellingly elegant redcurrant jelly, dried cranberries and powdered cinnamon notes plus wafts of potpourri, dried figs, unsmoked cigars and dusty soil. Medium-bodied, it is notably far more delicately fruited than one would expect of Mouton, structured with bold freshness and a light chew of tannins before finishing on a mineral note. Indeed, it is skinny compared to great vintages, but it is ageing gracefully. For readers who love those soft-spoken, more delicately expressed styles, this one's for you!

Black red. Coffee, cigar box and chocolate aromas. Full-bodied, yet harmonious, with a lovely, silky texture. A caressing and rich wine. Gorgeous.

Scintillating nose; absolutely gorgeous aromas of vanilla-smothered berries, violet, and a fine, earthy, truffly quality with hints of cedar, coffee and spice. Deep and deliciously inviting. The palate lets this stunning first impression down slightly, with slightly under-powered cherry and blackcurrant fruit. There's a background of sweet oak, and good freshness with balanced acidity and fine tannins.

This sweet and generous Mouton embraces you from the start. The palate is filled with ripe black berries, cedar, and sweet spices, with soft, firm, and velvety tannins. Balanced, easy to drink, and easy to enjoy, this is a great vintage for Mouton.

Deep, clear transparent ruby colour. Slightly exotic, with incense, smoky tones, earl grey tea and blackcurrants. Great fruit, quite juicy on the palate, nuanced and complex. Full bodied with great fruit, tight and balanced. Fine tannins, long aftertaste.

Garnet red, it shows in the glass with a rather restrained aroma, fine maturity note and light rust aromas. The subtle fruit reminds somewhat of cassis as well as slightly candied fruit notes. On the palate this drop presents itself with a distinct acidity, mild tannins and soft finish. A thoroughly pleasant character in a lighter style.

Already evolved colour. Fruity and very open nose evoking an ageing bouquet. Note of plum, cedar, cassis, smoke. The palate is melted, pleasant but lacks the flesh and power expected in the middle. It will not go down in the annals of the vintage. Normal length.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
A bit on the short side, the red fruits have a spicy tart edge which are followed by its savoury side of leaves, herbs and tobacco leaf. Medium-bodied, a bit stoic, this is not really worth the money in today's marketplace. 89 Points

Not the most glorious 1990. Leathery, balsam notes on the nose and not nearly as rich and velvety as many of its peers in this super-ripe vintage. The acidity is becoming prominent and there is a lack of real concentration. With time in the glass it opened out to a certain lusciousness but then finished rather dry, even a little astringent.

La Revue du Vin de France
RVF Magazine This is not a legendary vintage for the château. The wine evolves in a delicate, slightly wild register. It lacks concentration and density for a premier cru. Nice persistence on smoky notes.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only growth in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, having initially been classified as a Deuxième Cru.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then known as Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered legend under the impetus of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernised the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed an absolute commitment to quality, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascent: « Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change ».

The singularity of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by great contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This pursuit of excellence can also be found in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

From the mythical 1945 and 1961 to the 1982 vintage and the 1996 wine, through to a more recent year such as the 2004 wine, the wines of Château Mouton Rothschild are among the most sought-after in the world of wine. The estate completes its grand vin with a second wine, Le Petit Mouton, created in 1993, and a rare white, Aile d'Argent.
