The great 1986 vintage was created by the artist Bernard Séjourné. Originally from Haiti, this painter-artist brings Château Mouton Rothschild into the spotlight through a painting on wood set in a lunar, dreamlike and mysterious atmosphere. The work depicts masks of women with half-closed eyes and long, graceful necks. Shells and exotic flowers also feature in this painting, which seems to be in motion.
Château Mouton Rothschild 1986 has aromas of dried fruits, prunes and milk caramel. Notes of rancio, peppery spices and cedar make it a complex wine. This premier cru classé is made up of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

The 1986 Mouton-Rothschild is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot that was picked from 2 October until 16 October. Winemaker Philippe Dhalluin, who was not working at the property back then, told me that the pH was fairly low at 3.54 when it is usually around 3.75, due to the natural tartaric acid in the vines. It has a powerful and intense bouquet as always: exemplary graphite and cedar scents, a touch of black pepper and incense. It seems to unfurl in the glass, like a motor revving its engine. The palate is beautifully balanced with its trademark firm tannic structure, a Mouton-Rothschild with backbone and masculinity. Layers of black fruit intermingling with mint and graphite, a hint of liquorice emanating from the Merlot, gently fanning out and my God, it is incredibly long. It is not like the 1985 Mouton-Rothschild that is so fleshy and generous. This is serious, aristocratic Mouton, a true vin de garde and yes, I do think drinkers will have to wait until it reaches its true peak. Sometimes that's just the way it is.

Strong carmine garnet, broad ochre rim, orange reflections. Attractive dark berry fruit on the nose, tobacco-like, nuances of dried herbs, some nougat, ripe cherry fruit, fine noble wood spice. Firm tannins on the palate, hints of blackberry confit and dark nougat, appears sweet and opulent at its core, mineral, tobacco-like nuances, very good length, fresh and persistent, saline aftertaste, has reached its first real drinking peak, certain further ageing potential.

Strong Bordeaux red, almost no signs of age. The nose is simply spectacular, immensely deep, noble, smoky, dark-fruited, blackberries, blackcurrants, dark cherries, wonderful spice, cinnamon, then also eucalyptus, pine resin, this is enormously complex, a drug for the nose, I could sniff for hours. On the palate taut, youthful, fresh and with very beautiful fruit on the attack, again dark berries, sensationally dense, plenty of everything and not too much of anything, very good balance, the wine has an imposing structure, power and body whilst being enormously rich in finesse, finely woven tannins support the fruit. Fresh on the finish, long-lasting and wonderfully balanced.

This was always an exceptional wine, but an exceptionally slow-maturing one. It was served blind and seemed immediately like Mouton with its sweet, light mintiness and spice. This opulent monument of a wine has at least cast off enough tannin to provide majestic drinking now. What a treat to encounter this wine again at this exciting stage of its life.

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only growth in the official 1855 Bordeaux classification to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, having initially been classified as a Second Growth.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then known as Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered into legend under the guidance of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernised the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed absolute quality standards, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascent: "First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change".

The distinctiveness of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by great contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This pursuit of excellence is also reflected in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.
