CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1985

Belgian surrealist artist, Paul Delvaux sublimates the Mouton Rothschild 1985 by creating a unique and original design for this label. Paul Delvaux represents here two model and chaste little girls of his drawing seem pensive and invaded by shyness. It is the bunch of grapes, the central element of the drawing, which links the two young women and connects them to each other.
Château Mouton Rothschild 1985 has fruity aromas of blackberries, blueberries and blackcurrants, as well as hints of mint, vanilla incense and cocoa. This Premier Cru Classé is made from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.

An exciting wine at the top but not yet over it. Will continue recklessly for another ten years or more.

A beautiful Mouton with impressive intensity, sweet dried fruits and supple, lush tannins. Wonderful to enjoy now - at its perfect peak with a lingering finish.

Strong ruby-garnet, broader watery rim. Dark berry compote on the nose, delicate notes of cassis and chocolate, fine suede leather hints, blackberries, exotic spices, cinnamon, mocha, fine roasted aromas, attractive, typical bouquet. Elegant, almost seems a touch open-knit, distinctive tannins that are well integrated, sweet dark berry note on the finish, dark chocolate, structured with finesse, somewhat demanding nuances on the finish, fine spice and good length, a multifaceted food companion.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted from an Imperiale at the Claret Club -85 Dinner at -The Square-. Interesting this: one of the best -85s but rendered far more reticent and backward in this large Imperiale format. It does have a gorgeous nose if you can wait for an hour and even so, much more generous and expressive than Lafite -85. Touches of pencil box, redcurrant and black truffle here. The palate is tannic, full-bodied and masculine, easing up with aeration, beautifully poised with a touch of black tea and tobacco towards the finish. This seems to be 10-years behind the regular bottle format! Tasted December 2009.

Fully mature, the wine is medium/full bodied, with a fresh, sweet, cassis, cherry, tobacco, spice and green leafy profile. Soft, polished and deceptively easy to drink, there is no reason not to be drinking your bottles, as this is not going to get better from here.

Surprisingly elegant, with lovely tobacco, cherry and berry aromas that blossom on the palate. Moderately soft tannins and a sweet, fruity finish. All finesse and ready to drink.

Rich and sweet initially on the nose but on the palate it's a little bit ordinary – not obviously first growth intensity (this was served blind). Refined and fresh but lightish.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Mouton Rothschild is undoubtedly one of the most famous wine estates in the world. In the Pauillac AOC, it has been a First Growth since 1973 in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification.

Purchased in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, Brane Mouton entered into legend under the name of Château Mouton-Rothschild. It was with the arrival of Baron Philippe de Rothschild that Mouton truly became the monumental 1st Growth that it is today. Mouton Rothschild 1945 and 1982 are among their finest vintages. Beyond the construction of cellars and buildings, and the accession to First Growth status, it is the passion of a lifetime found in action by this exceptional man.

Classified as Second Growth in 1855, Château Mouton Rothschild became First Growth in 1973. Its motto "First I cannot be, second I do not deign, Mouton I am" thus became "First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change".

The elegance and magic of this wine have thus charmed the greatest contemporary artists who, each year, illustrate Mouton's priceless wines by creating an original artwork on the label. Château D'Armailhac and Château Clerc Milon follow in the footsteps of this quality commitment from the Rothschild family.

The great vintages of Château Mouton Rothschild are: 1994, 1989, 1986, 1985, 1983, 1982, 1970, 1966, 1962, 1961, 1959, 1955, 1953, 1949, 1947, 1945
