The Mouton Rothschild 1987 label pays a final tribute to Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Produced by the Swiss painter Hans Erni, the work highlights the portrait of the Baron adorned with bunches of grapes and rams' horns, reminiscent of the emblem of Château Mouton Rothschild. This is how, through this painting, Hans Erni transforms his model into a true legend of wine.
Château Mouton Rothschild 1987 reveals notes of wax, fruits such as raspberry and cherry as well as aromas of undergrowth. This Premier Cru Classé is made from 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot.

The colour remains beautiful. The nose has the "dead leaf" and cigar note of imperfectly ripened cabernet sauvignon. This recalls an older style of Bordeaux wines. On the palate, this wine focuses entirely on the attack where it immediately plays on smoothness. The body is good for a vintage considered very average, especially in the mid-palate. The pleasant surprise comes from the persistence of the structure which does not collapse in the second part of the palate, as in 92. The wine finishes with a pleasant and flavourful mellowness with a still perceptible tannin. Drink now.

The 1987 would appear to be a sure bet for the wine of the vintage. It remains the most complete and backward 1987 Medoc, with at least 10-15 years of ageing potential. The touching dedication from the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild's daughter on the label should also be noted. 1987 was the last vintage produced by the Baron, and thus will probably fetch a fortune in 40 or 50 years. One of the deepest and most opaque wines of the vintage, with a tight, yet promising bouquet of cedar and blackcurrants, this wine exhibits surprising depth, medium to full body, and plenty of tannin in the finish. An amazingly powerful wine for the vintage, it is richer than the 1989 and 1990!

Well-covered ruby garnet, violet reflections. In the nose damp bread, somewhat unclean spice, dried fruit, somewhat diffuse, on the palate fresh plum note, austere tannins, still lively, dry finish. 2006 from a magnum: Delicately leafy undertones, some cream and caramel. On the palate a delicate sweetness, reminiscent of plum compote, fine, rather discreet tannins, a rather delicate Mouton with ripe aromas in the aftertaste.

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only growth in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, having initially been classified as a Deuxième Cru.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then known as Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered legend under the impetus of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernised the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed an absolute commitment to quality, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascent: « Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change ».

The singularity of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by great contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This pursuit of excellence can also be found in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

From the mythical 1945 and 1961 to the 1982 vintage and the 1996 wine, through to a more recent year such as the 2004 wine, the wines of Château Mouton Rothschild are among the most sought-after in the world of wine. The estate completes its grand vin with a second wine, Le Petit Mouton, created in 1993, and a rare white, Aile d'Argent.
