Purchased in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, Brane Mouton became a legend under the name of Mouton-Rothschild. With the advent of Baron Philippe de Rothschild Chateau Mouton Rothschild became the truly monumental 1er Cru it is today. In addition to the construction of cellars and buildings, and the ascension to 1er Cru status, it is the passion of a lifetime manifested in action by this remarkable man. Ranked Second Cru in 1855, it is now, since 1973, a premier cru classe. His motto became "First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change." The elegance and magic of this wine has charmed the most important contemporary artists who each year, illustrate their an original work of art on the label of Chateau Mouton Rothschild. Chateau D'Armailhac and Chateau Clerc Milon followed suit in the quality of the Rothschild family.

The beautiful 1999 Mouton Rothschild may be a modern day clone of their 1962 or 1985. Its saturated rubypurple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of cedar wood, creme de cassis, wood smoke, coffee, and dried herbs. The wine is forward, lush, and full-bodied. It is already complex as well as succulent, fleshy, and long. Tannin in the finish suggests more nuances will emerge in 4-5 years. It is a complex, classic Mouton.
Delivers sweet tobacco and plum aromas, with a lovely richness. Full-bodied, featuring lots of cedar, tobacco, chocolate and berry character. Long and silky in the palate. There is no sense in waiting; this is so delicious now.
Very sweet, hovering between lissom and plump ripeness. Next. . deep velvety; toasted Cabernet aroma that opened up beautifully. 'Fleshy' noted again, dry finish and charm. .
(2004). A bit more evolved on the fringe. Evokes Merlot. Nose. Net. Moderate to good. Exotic. Mature. A bit animal. Mouth. Caresses, showing its mature side, exotic, reminiscent of Pomerol. The bottom and ends delicate wine, a little less tight than the others with exotic notes of chocolate and a touch more wooded.
