CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1996

Drink between 2010 and 2056
The artist Gu Gang was commissioned to create a unique work for this 1996 vintage. It is in an Asian atmosphere that the label of Château Mouton Rothschild was designed. The Chinese painter and calligrapher brings together in his drawing five ideograms which all signify the heart, varying the colour and stroke for each one. The result, both poetic and subtle, which he named "Heart to Heart", is intended as an act of faith in universal harmony.
Château Mouton Rothschild 1996 is a powerful, fruity wine, with touches of fresh mint, woody and floral notes. This Premier Cru Classé is composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The last time I tasted the 1996 Mouton Rothschild (maybe a couple of years ago?), I recall it was a bit broody and closed. This showing was anything but! Deep garnet in colour, it sashays out of the glass with lavishly dressed, gregarious crème de cassis, baked blackberries and plum pudding scents plus touches of menthol, fenugreek, star anise and sandalwood with fleeting glimpses at dried rose petals and oolong tea. The full-bodied palate is richly fruited, opulent and oh-so seductive, with bags of youthful black fruit and lovely finely grained tannins, finishing with fantastic freshness and length.

The standout wine at the tasting. Concentration and opulence on the palate, still retaining intense cassis notes. Youthful, deep purple in the glass. Mint notes on the nose work beautifully with the glossy but restrained oak. Still has plenty of acidity giving freshness to the palate, luxurious tannins suggest this still has a long way to go. Distinctly classy. (AWH)

A gorgeous, powerful Mouton that has wonderful concentration and focus. Filled with cedar and savoury spices with firm, ripe tannins. A powerful wine that is just starting to open.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Seemingly close to fully-developed, the wine is medium/full-bodied with a catchy display of tobacco leaf, cedar, cigar box, spice, forest leaf, herbs and red currants. Most of the tannins feel melted away. Soft, chewy, spicy and fresh with an herb, spice and cedar tint to the red fruits, this is quite nice for drinking today.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only growth in the official 1855 Bordeaux classification to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, having initially been classified as a Second Growth.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then known as Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered into legend under the guidance of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernised the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed absolute quality standards, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascent: "First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change".

The distinctiveness of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by great contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This pursuit of excellence is also reflected in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

Among the most iconic vintages of Château Mouton Rothschild are:

Château Mouton Rothschild 1945, Château Mouton Rothschild 1946, Château Mouton Rothschild 1947, Château Mouton Rothschild 1982, Château Mouton Rothschild 1986, Château Mouton Rothschild 1989, Château Mouton Rothschild 1993, Château Mouton Rothschild 1995, Château Mouton Rothschild 1996, Château Mouton Rothschild 2000, Château Mouton Rothschild 2005
