Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Château Mouton Rothschild initially showed ripe but somewhat restrained, then opened up. Very complex, smoke, tobacco, chocolate, spicy notes, a hint of green pepper, dark cherry fruit. The palate very well structured, fine, largely resolved tannins, a perfectly dosed acidity and a finish of very good length. Not quite a great Mouton but a Mouton that will give great pleasure for at least ten years.

The wine was decanted, only to take it off its sediment. The colour is browning a little, with a red oxide overall hue but some ruby at the core. On the nose there is a gorgeously deep, truffle and game perfume, withal rich berry fruit and subtle Sandalwood notes. There's a suggestion of real intensity. On the palate the wine has plenty of authority. It has a core of spicy tannin and lean, sinewy tannin and acidity, but there's a richness to both texture and fruit flavour too. Spiced plums, tobacco and lots of concentration. A lovely Mouton, with seemingly time ahead of it too.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted from magnum and presented by Baron Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, the 1989 Château Mouton-Rothschild might not reach the ethereal heights of the 1982 or 1986, but it is certainly a lovely Claret. It has an attractive, slightly leafy bouquet armed with cedar and pencil lead. There is less fruit concentration than I expected, resolutely classic, slightly austere Bordeaux. The palate follows suit. What it lacks in substance it compensates with in balance and personality. This is an understated Mouton-Rothschild that is probably at its peak, although I envisage this offering another two decades of pleasure. Whilst this showing did not replicate some glorious bottles in the past, it remains a very fine Claret that may not be inclined to improve any further. Tasted February 2016.

Notably dark ruby with a blackish tinge. Dense, exotic cassis nose. Lots of ripe fruit but no obvious sweetness. Clearly a very fine, long-lived wine. Attractive freshness on the finish. Very persistent. No hint of tiredness or fuzzy, indistinct fruit – unlike some 1989s. Complex, classic claret. No hint of modernism. An attractive spicy note at the end. Very neat.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only growth in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, having initially been classified as a Deuxième Cru.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then known as Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered legend under the impetus of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernised the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed an absolute commitment to quality, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascent: « Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change ».

The singularity of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by great contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This pursuit of excellence can also be found in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

From the mythical 1945 and 1961 to the 1982 vintage and the 1996 wine, through to a more recent year such as the 2004 wine, the wines of Château Mouton Rothschild are among the most sought-after in the world of wine. The estate completes its grand vin with a second wine, Le Petit Mouton, created in 1993, and a rare white, Aile d'Argent.
