After the immense success of the 1982 vintage, the 1983 vintage is trying to establish itself as a great vintage. A rather satisfactory year at Château Latour in the Pauillac appellation. Marked by an ideal flowering which began on June 8 and superb harvests at the end of September, Château Latour offers a great harmonious wine with a very present fruit in the mouth. A pleasant tasting.

This was a very good bottle. Dark vibrant crimson. Very concentrated and sweet with an intense nose reminiscent of liquorice that almost reminded me of Syrah. Quite amazing persistence with an impressively fresh finish. Because the bottle I'd chosen had been a 1961 that was a little disappointing on first opening, I thought this could have been it – a sign of how winning this 1983 was.

A solid, firm wine with a tannin structure that is softening. Aromas of chocolate, ripe fruit and meat. Full-bodied, with loads of fruit and tannins and a long, long finish. Thick and chewy. Gorgeous.

Beautiful, slightly evolved colour. The wine does not reveal itself on opening. It needs time but will gradually open up during tasting. Black fruits, mushroom, great depth. The palate is rich and long. It does not have the brilliance found in a great vintage, but this is a more than excellent '83.

Strong ruby garnet, delicately ochre-tinged, with a broader watery rim. On the nose, ripe plum compote, forest berry jam, subtle lactic nuances, fine herbal spice. On the palate, substantial and immensely sweet, fine tannins, delicate honey touch, good length, subtle bitter chocolate note, a hint of black tea on the finish, oranges in the aftertaste, adheres well, delicate roasted notes, still has a good future even in single bottle, an absolute top wine of the vintage.

Château Latour

Château Latour is one of the most iconic estates in the Pauillac appellation and a founding reference in Bordeaux wine history. Its name dates back to the 14th century, linked to the presence of a watchtower on the Gironde estuary, whose proximity continues to profoundly mark the identity of the vineyard. From the 18th century onwards, the wines of Château Latour have been recognised for their consistency and ageing ability, establishing themselves among the greatest wines of the Médoc.

Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 classification, Château Latour occupies a central position at the pinnacle of the Bordeaux hierarchy. The estate is built upon particularly homogeneous deep gravel terroir, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives the wines a powerful structure, remarkable depth and great consistency of expression.

The signature of Château Latour is distinguished by a dense tannic architecture and demanding construction, favouring precision and longevity over immediate appeal.
