CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 2002

Maturity: 2010 - 2040

Tasting comment: Château Mouton Rothschild 2002 reveals an intense structure and a nice balance between touches of fruity and woody notes.

Anecdote about this vintage: The contemporary Russian artist Kabakov created the label for Mouton Rothschild 2002. Through this work named “OKHO” which means window in Russian, he expresses with an effect of perspective another world: dozens of wings that carry us in a joyful flight towards dreams and bliss. This drawing is a transparent allegory of the magic of a great wine!

Grape Variety/Blend: This Premier Cru Classé is composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. (variations are possible from one vintage to another)

A very attractive nose: tobacco, black coffee. The palate has a little more power and concentration than Lafite. Again, a masculine wine but the tannins are soaked in rich cassis. Similar to the 1988 but with more class and balance. This is a great success for Mouton and my favourite First Growth this year.

After a period of introspection, this wine is opening up again and returning to its high level. On the nose, the smoky and toasted aromatic signature cannot be confused with any other cru. The palate shows fleshiness, but also increasingly caressing qualities. On the finish, a touch of firmness, typical of Cabernet Sauvignon, still evokes its youth. The wine is better decanted than not decanted.

The barrel sample at the château was very convincing: Strong ruby garnet, good luminosity, opaque core. On the nose, delicate smoked note, delicately animal, sloes, coal, dark berry compote. On the palate, almost floral, thick and concentrated, but already has momentum, pepper and spice, a substantial wine with chocolate aftertaste, coffee, medium length, classic structure. 2006: Shows fine dark berry nuances, subtle smoky spice, mineral note.

Deep crimson. Firm, strongly cassis nose. Very voluptuous texture. Appetising and beautifully balanced. Obviously Médoc. Dried out a little on the end but the contrast between the flesh of this wine and skinniness of the Margaux tasted immediately beforehand could not have been more marked. It was still fresh and clean 24 hours afterwards but had lost a little density.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only growth in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, having initially been classified as a Deuxième Cru.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then known as Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered legend under the impetus of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernised the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed an absolute commitment to quality, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascent: « Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change ».

The singularity of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by great contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This pursuit of excellence can also be found in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

From the mythical 1945 and 1961 to the 1982 vintage and the 1996 wine, through to a more recent year such as the 2004 wine, the wines of Château Mouton Rothschild are among the most sought-after in the world of wine. The estate completes its grand vin with a second wine, Le Petit Mouton, created in 1993, and a rare white, Aile d'Argent.
