Wine Spectator October - 1994

Wonderfully rich and still holding back. Beautiful plum, toasted oak, berry and tobacco character. Firm with a full body. Drinkable now; better with time.

Jean-Marc Quarin April - 2002
Jean-Marc Quarin
This average vintage gives some pleasant surprises and wines with finesse lacking body and power. Here, the colour remains beautiful with blood red and tiled notes. The nose begins with vegetal notes of tea, dead leaves. The fruit (blackcurrant) only emerges with swirling. In the mouth, the elongated body offers a suave pleasure on the attack, but the mid-palate does not respond. The whole finishes with both elegance and a tannin whose firmness is no longer a quality for its age. I regret not finding a finish as suave as the entry. I do not believe that time will improve it. It lacks a spark.

Falstaff December - 2006

Medium carmine garnet, violet reflections, still youthful colour. On the nose, a fine cream topping, good sweetness, delicate caramel touch. On the palate, juicy, showing a fine red berry note, firm tannin structure, medium length, vital, somewhat dry on the finish, an elegant food companion. On the palate, elegant and ripe, taut tannins, medium length.

Medium bodied, with a brightness to the red berries and cranberry fruits that are accompanied by spicebox, cedar, lead pencil, forest floor and tobacco notes. There is charm without a lot of depth and with the higher levels of acidity creeping in, the wine is on the fading side of life.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only growth in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, having initially been classified as a Deuxième Cru.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then known as Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered legend under the impetus of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernised the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed an absolute commitment to quality, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascent: « Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change ».

The singularity of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by great contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This pursuit of excellence can also be found in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

From the mythical 1945 and 1961 to the 1982 vintage and the 1996 wine, through to a more recent year such as the 2004 wine, the wines of Château Mouton Rothschild are among the most sought-after in the world of wine. The estate completes its grand vin with a second wine, Le Petit Mouton, created in 1993, and a rare white, Aile d'Argent.
