LE PETIT MOUTON de Mouton Rothschild 1996

This year, temperatures were higher than seasonal averages. In August, the potential of the 1996 harvest promises a great vintage. Indeed, the harvested grapes were perfectly healthy and of great qualitative richness.
1996 is a very fine vintage at Château Mouton Rothschild. Le Petit Mouton Rothschild 1996 has a very fine nose, revealing floral aromas, toasted, smoked and vanilla notes. The tannins are powerful and of high quality, characteristic of a great Pauillac.

Dark colour, of good intensity, evolved. Moderately aromatic nose with ripe fruit. Very beautiful entry on the palate, full, and the wine develops very fruity, smooth, still full, juicy, flavourful, noble, with taste, towards a spicy finish, a little lively, but long and juicy. Incredible performance for this second wine which surpasses the first! A first in my ratings. So, we redid the blind tasting the next day and...bis repetita!

Very dark yet with a very promising sheen to it. Deep, brooding, intense. This does not taste like a second wine (even though it's in a supposedly second wine flight)! Very luscious and velvety. Rather furry tannins on the finish but clearly very ambitious. Almost over-extracted but it has the fruit intensity to stand the tannic charge. Unusually for a second wine, not ready to drink. Very dry finish. Second favourite! (second wine)

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only growth in the official 1855 Bordeaux classification to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, having initially been classified as a Second Growth.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then known as Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered into legend under the guidance of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernised the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed absolute quality standards, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascent: "First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change".

The distinctiveness of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by great contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This pursuit of excellence is also reflected in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

Among the most iconic vintages of Château Mouton Rothschild are:

Château Mouton Rothschild 1945, Château Mouton Rothschild 1946, Château Mouton Rothschild 1947, Château Mouton Rothschild 1982, Château Mouton Rothschild 1986, Château Mouton Rothschild 1989, Château Mouton Rothschild 1993, Château Mouton Rothschild 1995, Château Mouton Rothschild 1996, Château Mouton Rothschild 2000, Château Mouton Rothschild 2005
