(4-1996) My most recent notes include a flawless magnum and an extraordinarily good magnum...The wine had a beautiful colour; medium deep, with rich legs but not intense. Just about every note over the years refers to a glorious fragrance which seems to unravel itself after 15 or 20 minutes in the glass. A glorious mouthful.

Jancis Robinson November - 2007

Rich, sweet and so easy to like on the nose. Lighter in terms of weight than Latour and Mouton 1945 served alongside but the Lafite character is here, overlaid with the concentration of the 1945 vintage. Pretty good, even if the acidity is just starting to peek out from under all that ripe fruit. Another wine that would be great if it were served in isolation instead of in this line-up of Lafite, Latour and Mouton from the three most famous vintages of the mid 20th century.

Château Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Pauillac appellation, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, but it was in the 18th century that the château acquired international renown, particularly among European courts. In the 1855 classification, Château Lafite Rothschild was ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé, permanently establishing its status at the top of the Bordeaux hierarchy.

Owned by the Rothschild family since 1868, the estate rests on a terroir of fine, deep gravel, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines of Château Lafite Rothschild are distinguished by their finesse, aromatic precision and balance, favouring elegance and length over demonstrative power.

Emblematic vintages such as Château Lafite Rothschild 1945, Château Lafite Rothschild 1982, Château Lafite Rothschild 1986, Château Lafite Rothschild 1990, Château Lafite Rothschild 1996, Château Lafite Rothschild 2000 or Château Lafite Rothschild 2005 illustrate the estate's stylistic consistency and its ability to express the identity of Pauillac with clarity. Château Lafite Rothschild remains an essential reference for understanding the classical excellence of great Bordeaux wines.
