Tasted at Roberson's Pichon Lalande/Pichon Baron vertical. It is a number of years since I have tasted this outstanding expression of a great Left Bank vintage. It has a sublime nose, slightly melted in character with pencil lead, blackberry, pencil box and some tertiary notes, moving more towards secondary aromas quicker than the Pichon Lalande '96 tasted alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch more piquancy than the Pichon Lalande, perhaps not quite the harmony or complexity, but fresh and lively with notes of tar, cedar and brambly black fruits. I like the citric acidity threaded through this wine, lending so much vivacity and freshness. Very good ageing potential. Not in the same class as Pichon Lalande, but a thoroughly enjoyable Pauillac.

Served with Pichon Lalande 1996 at the Vintners' Company's International Wine Trade Dinner. The wines kept changing in the glass – as did my preference. But here's what I wrote initially. Lead-pencil nose but very slightly scrawny and taut initially. Not especially sweet nor generous but fine-boned and correct. A medium-weight classic that fell away slightly on the finish.

Dark colour, of good intensity, evolved. Intense nose, fruity, fine, perfumed. Entry on the palate immediately refined, then the wine melts, airy and noble in its touch, with flavour and a long flavoursome finish with present but melted tannicity. A good surprise!

Decanted about 30 minutes, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated, tannic, masculine and classic. Loaded with tobacco leaf, smoke, wet earth and bright red fruits, the wine shows some bite in the fruit that works perfectly with the freshness. I am sure this will improve, but it is already quite tasty today.

Château Pichon Longueville Baron is a Bordeaux wine estate and Second Growth classified in 1855. The Pichon Longueville Baron vineyard (as it is called to distinguish it from its neighbor Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande) is largely adjacent to that of Latour, on one of the finest terroirs in Pauillac. It was in the 17th century that Jacques de Pichon, Baron de Longueville, began establishing the Pichon-Longueville vineyard. The wine's reputation was established within a few years. The current château was built in 1851 by Raoul de Pichon-Longueville. Château Pichon-Longueville is produced from vines in the estate's historic terroir. This results in full-bodied wines, rich in tannins, characterized by their finesse and elegance. Their length on the palate is exceptional and they have significant aging potential.
