Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted at the vertical in London, I have instead used the tasting note from a bottle opened at the property when I visited just a couple of weeks later. The 1996 Montrose is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot picked between 23 September and 6 October. It was served alongside the 1986 Montrose, however, this is a far better wine and reconfirms Robert Parker's remarks at his own vertical at the property in 2014. For me, it is that loamy character that defines the nose—freshly tilled, damp soil that tinctures the black fruit —that takes you straight to this particular château. This is classic through and through and very well defined. The palate is wonderful with very fine delineation, pitch-perfect acidity, touches of graphite infusing the red and black fruit that dovetails into a very pretty, floral finish. This is clearly one of the great wines of the 1996 vintage and I would be stocking up as much as I could, because it will give 30-40 years of pleasure.

Jeannie Cho Lee February - 2015
Jeannie Cho Lee
A mature but still youthful Montrose that is just starting to show its herbal, leather and savoury spice notes. The mid palate is is still filled with juicy blackberries and cedar. A gorgeous, plush, sumptuous Montrose with a long finish. Enjoy now and over the next few decades.

Jean-Marc Quarin October - 2005
Jean-Marc Quarin
Dark red colour. Good intensity. Beginning to evolve. Nose a little fresh, on the edge of maturity. One gets used to it after a few seconds but, after the 2003, it's tough. The palate is superior. There is the sweetness, the suavity and a subtle energy that makes this wine silky, caressing, meticulous in its tannin, melting in the finish, with a subtle taste of flowers and fruit. It's delicious and quite close to a Burgundy, as the structure is more slender than broad. Superb.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Old school, classic in style, the wine is crisp, energetic and stubbornly tannic. The fruit is short, bright, and leaning to the strict, austere, cranberry and light red fruit side of the style range. The wine is a bit more interesting on the developed, cedar and tobacco edged nose, than on the palate. If this is your taste, you will probably like it more than I did.

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine February - 2017
Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Medium Bordeaux red, first signs of maturity. Very open nose, alongside floral notes, violets, roses also a hint of medicinal, exciting, needs air, very soft palate, what a wonderful red fruit, there are still tannins, very fine acidity, crisp, medium body, matured to perfection, a hint of tobacco, harmonious, enjoyable, has enormous drinkability. Bordeaux at its best, without claim to greatness. Now until 2028

Jancis Robinson July - 2015

Served blind. Mid ruby with lots of evolution at the rim. Very mature and nicely sweet and evolved, with the acidity and light to medium body of 1985. But no, it's a 1996! Hervé Berland admits it looks older than it is.

Château Montrose

Château Montrose is one of the most iconic estates in the Saint-Estèphe appellation on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it embodies the power, longevity and stylistic rigour characteristic of the great wines of the northern Médoc. Located at the southern tip of Saint-Estèphe, immediately bordering the Gironde, the estate benefits from a terroir of rare homogeneity, often compared to that of the greatest neighbouring classified growths of Pauillac.

The vineyard of Château Montrose extends over approximately 95 hectares in a single block, predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot. This configuration gives the wines a deep structure, a pronounced aromatic intensity and a remarkable ageing potential. Montrose's style is distinguished by its balance between controlled power, freshness and tannic precision.

Among the most outstanding vintages are Château Montrose 1921, Château Montrose 1989, Château Montrose 1990, Château Montrose 1996, Château Montrose 2000, Château Montrose 2009, Château Montrose 2010, Château Montrose 2015, regularly acclaimed for their concentration and ageing potential. The estate also produces a recognised second wine, La Dame de Montrose, which comes from the same quality standards and offers a more accessible interpretation of the terroir.
