Tasted blind. Blackish crimson. Not very pure or direct on the nose. Muted – is this a good thing? There is concentration here but nothing other-worldly. Just a bit of heat on the end. Seems to lack a bit of freshness in this context. But the tannins have been treated very well.

Floral, playful, profound and complex, violets, stony notes, liquorice, noble. Powerful, dense, yet feather-light, sensational tannins, finely interwoven with the fruit, excellent balance, red-fruited, very long. Belongs to the best of the vintage.

Leather and black-spice aromas are a prelude to the richness and power of this wine. It is concentrated and full of ripe black-plum flavours, and acidity. Drink this massive wine from 2028.

Falstaff March - 2024
Falstaff
Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle ochre rim. An inviting bouquet with subtle notes of liquorice, black cherry and nuances of oak. Medium complexity with red berries, a fresh structure, silky, ripe tannins and a salty minerality. Polished and approachable but should ideally be left to mature for a few more years.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Deep in colour, especially for the vintage, you find tobacco leaf, black cherry, pencil shavings, cedar, spice, and dark fruits appearing in the perfume with no effort at all. There is a richness in the palate. The fruit is ripe, fresh, vibrant, and chewy, with lift and energy in the mouth that carries through to the finish. As all fans of Montrose know, the wine more often than not requires decades of age before it is ready to taste, but 2021 is a different beast, allowing you to enjoy it with just a few years before it begins to be fun to taste. The wine was made by blending 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, 13.1% ABV, 3.7. Yields were 38 hectolitres per hectare, with 40% of the harvest going into the Grand Vin. The harvest took place from September 21 to October 6. Drink from 2028-2055.

13.2% alcohol. 37% of the 2021 grapes went into the Grand Vin. Dense ruby. In the nose super floral, cassis and blackberries, a hint of violets, plus stony notes, cool and noble, profound. On the palate slender and fresh, this is super crisp, has freshness, spice and a very good structure, the tannins are powerful, yet remain discreetly in the background, super finely interwoven with the fruit, everything in great balance. In the finish long, fresh, red-fruited and with great breed. As always at a very high level, but stylistically completely different from the last three hot years. Can mature. 2028-2055+

Château Montrose

Château Montrose is one of the most iconic estates in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it embodies the power, longevity and stylistic rigour characteristic of the great wines of the northern Médoc. Located at the southern tip of Saint-Estèphe, immediately bordering the Gironde, the estate benefits from a terroir of rare homogeneity, often compared to that of the greatest neighbouring classified growths of Pauillac.

The vineyard of Château Montrose extends over approximately 95 hectares in a single block, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot. This composition gives the wines a deep structure, a pronounced aromatic intensity and a remarkable ageing potential. The style of Montrose is distinguished by its balance of controlled power, freshness and tannin precision.

Aged for approximately eighteen months in French oak barrels, this grand vin requires many years of cellaring. The estate counts among its legends 1921, 1929, the 1982 vintage and 1990, while the 2009 wine and the 2010 vintage proudly represent its more recent period. La Dame de Montrose, the second selection born in 1983, offers a more tender interpretation of the same terroir. The estate also produces a recognised second wine, La Dame de Montrose, crafted to the same exacting standards and offering a more accessible expression of the terroir.
