Served after L'Eglise Clinet, it stands out thanks to its fuller and smoother palate. This wine is delicious to drink at present. However, I regret a slightly sharp edge on the finish. In other words, a touch more maturity or selection would have positioned this vintage at a very high level. It still has a long life ahead of it.

Here is another ultraripe nose, showing dried fruits and treacle tar aromas. Full-bodied, with very ripe flavours of dried beef, raisin and spices, verging on rustic. Impressive palate. Yes, this is a little dry and tannic, even austere, but I love the opulence.

Mid to full garnet. Mellow sandalwood and cedar on the nose, some gentle red autumnal fruit and a pinch of tobacco. Harmonious on the attack, quite fresh, nicely classical and understated, long. A quietly satisfying and unshowy wine that has shown similarly across almost a full case over the past 15 years.

The 1989 Vieux Château Certan has long been one of my favorite wines of that decade. The bouquet shows no signs of relinquishing that title with gorgeous black truffle, bay leaf, warm gravel and briary scents that are simply beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity, "warm earth" on the entry, leather and truffle, great depth here with sublime precision on the finish, which is bridled with hints of mushroom and cloves. Maybe this is reaching its peak? Then again, it shows absolutely no signs of reaching the end of its plateau. This is nothing short of a wondrous Pomerol from Alexandre Thienpont.

Château Vieux Certan
Vieux Château Certan, Pomerol, Bordeaux. The Vieux Château Certan estate is located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau. The Vieux Château Certan vineyard consists of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. This grape variety composition is explained by the desire to find the best possible balance between Merlot and Cabernet Franc. On the Vieux Château Certan terroir, Cabernet Franc reaches an exceptional level of maturity and quality. Owned by the Thienpont family for nearly a century, Vieux Château Certan is managed by Alexandre Thienpont who has made this estate one of the greatest names in Pomerol. A great concentration and a sumptuous aromatic palette characterize the style of Vieux Château Certan. The estate produces a second wine: Gravette de Certan.
