CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 2001

The very rainy winter accelerated flowering. The summer was characterized by an unusual alternation of hot and cool, dry and wet periods. As a result, the growth of the grapes was favored and the ripening slowed down. The harvest took place late, but in good weather.
Château Margaux 2001 is a beautiful wine. A vintage quite similar to the 1999 vintage. Tender and harmonious in tasting, Château Margaux will delight lovers of great wines. To be tasted now or kept for another 15 to 20 years to reveal the full aromatic bouquet that these years of cellaring will be able to deliver.

(5-2009). Dark colour, of good intensity, slightly evolved. Fine nose, fruity, smoky, with a touch of coffee. In contrast to the previous wine, due to a lack of spice, it seems “cold”. Superb soft palate entry. The wine develops particularly aromatic and melting, offering plenty of flavour. Of good body, a touch woody, it finishes on a soft tannicity and an overall charming profile.

(3-2004). Subtle and very perfumed with floral, currants, minerals and berry aromas with a hint of toasted barrels. Medium- to full-bodied, with an outstandingly refined core of fruit and smoky, earthy, berry and almost meaty character. It's long and caressing. Could use a bit more fruit to be up with the other first-growths.

(6-2004). Performing well from bottle, Château Margaux's 2001, which is somewhat reminiscent of both the 1985 and 1999, is an elegant, seamlessly constructed effort with a deep ruby-purple colour, and a beautiful nose of flowers, crème de cassis, blackberries, and cedar. A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc, this forward, opulent beauty can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20 years. This is one of the most elegant wines of the vintage.

Jancis Robinson March - 2012

Mid ruby. Great depth and richness and complexity – and yet this manages to be racy and delicate too. Real lift and freshness – thoroughbred stuff. The hedonistic fruit cunningly disguises what is still a heavy charge of tannin. Great persistence. A haunting wine.

Château Margaux
Château Margaux

Château Margaux is one of the most prestigious estates of the Margaux appellation and a major historical figure of Bordeaux excellence. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 classification, the château draws on a terroir of fine, deep gravels that encourages the expression of a wine of rare elegance and great aromatic complexity.

The Grand Vin de Château Margaux has been recognised since the 17th century as one of the most accomplished expressions of the Bordeaux vineyard. It owes its qualities to the combination of an exceptional terroir, demanding viticulture and a winemaking approach oriented towards precision and balance. The finesse of the tannins, the aromatic depth, the freshness and the length on the palate are the constant hallmarks of the Margaux style.

The great vintages punctuate its history, from the 1953 wine, then the 1982 vintage to the 1990 and the 2000 vintage, through to the 2015, regarded as one of the estate's recent pinnacles. Le Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, the second wine, offers a more immediate interpretation. They illustrate the estate's ability to produce wines of great complexity, capable of evolving harmoniously over several decades, whilst retaining a remarkable clarity of their terroir.
