PAVILLON ROUGE du Château Margaux 1984

Pavillon Rouge is the second wine of Château Margaux. It comes from the same vineyards and benefits from the estate's expertise. Pavillon Rouge is made from lots that are not selected for the grand vin, generally from vines that are still too young. It offers a more accessible expression of Château Margaux's style. More supple and fruity in its youth, it allows one to discover the finesse and elegance of this prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classé.

Tasting note: We are surprised by the bottle aging of this rather difficult vintage. The finesse is there, the palate is a bit dry but still fresh.

Grape Variety/Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon (~75%), Merlot (~20%), Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot (~5%) (variations are possible from one vintage to another)

Aging: 18 to 24 months in new oak barrels

Maturity: Old wine

Food and Wine Pairing: Grilled red or white meat, Milk-fed lamb, Cep mushrooms, Hard cheeses

Château Margaux
Château Margaux

Château Margaux is one of the greatest wine estates in Bordeaux. In the AOC, Margaux is listed among the Premier Crus Classés in the official 1855 Médoc wine classification.

If it is a privilege to bear the name of its Margaux appellation, there is no doubt that Château Margaux does it great honour.

For several centuries, this Premier Cru Classé has expressed to the highest degree the exceptional qualities of terroirs patiently assembled by several generations of owners. Maintained and harvested exclusively by hand with extreme care, the 78 hectares of vineyards (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) draw their richness very deeply from a particularly dense and thick clay-gravel soil.

Fermentation in oak vats, after which the wine is strictly selected, is followed by 18 to 24 months of ageing in new oak barrels. A masterpiece among Bordeaux wines, the best according to some, Château Margaux reveals finesse and opulence, depth and complexity when tasted, and develops a bouquet of rare elegance with notes of rose, violet, and black fruits, underpinned by tight tannins that require patient ageing before reaching their full potential. The château also produces a second wine, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, and a dry white wine, Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux (100% Sauvignon Blanc).

The greatest vintages of Château Margaux are: 1900, 1928, 1953, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1990
